Dave Matthews Band – Christmas Song Lyrics 17 years ago
I know you posted this like 5 years ago, but you are thoroughly wrong about what Dave is trying to communicate in nearly everything he says. He, like myself, appreciates what Jesus did as a human being. This song is simply expressing his deep appreciation for all the amazing things Jesus did purely out of love. He does not buy into all of his supernatural business the bible goes into. Like me I think he sees all of that as purely metaphoric. "Eat this bread, but think of it as me, drink this wine and dream it will be the blood of our children all around" simply describe how these miracles were actually just works of love. I also believe, and I think Dave does as well, that heaven and hell are metaphors for how you live your own life. You can live in either one if you truly want to. He is not Christian, and neither am I, but that doesn't mean that he cannot believe in the loving nature of Jesus. As for spilling the blood of his children all around, and I can see how it all soon will be, meaning that he failed, that is wrong. In my opinion, that means that he never intended his works to become what they are today. When he was killed, he knew at that moment that everything he did would be misinterpreted and would stay from its original roots. It means that perhaps Jesus wanted everyone to simply live by his morals and messages, and not develop an entire new religion as that might lead to hatred, everything he stood against. Again this is my rough interpretation, but I truly believe it to be more meaningful to consider the works of Jesus the man and not Jesus the son of God.
