"Comes out to stilts supporting the wait of lust, I always thought you were someone i could always trust. Now watch this we smacking flesh, I'm sure you don't even care. But with your eyelids sown back to your brows. This leaves you forced to stare." ... does he rape her.? |

| Bright Eyes – Haligh, Haligh, a Lie, Haligh Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I've interpreted this song about a girlfriend that committed suicide... & towards the end of her life, he felt as if he was distanced from her. but, she was cheating on him. so... he thinks the entire relationship was a lie, & he doesn't know what to think. "The phone slips from a loose grip Words were missed then, some apology "I didnt want to tell you this No, its just some guy she's been hanging out with I dont know, the past couple weeks I guess" Well, thank you and hang up the phone" He just found out from a friend that she was cheating on him. "Let the funeral start, hear the casket close Let's pin split-black ribbon to your overcoat Well, laughter pours from under doors In this house, I don't understand that sound no more It seems artificial, like a TV set" He's going to her funeral, and he's completely numb to everything. "I remember everything The words we spoke on freezing South Street And all those mornings watching you get ready for school You combed your hair inside that mirror The one you painted blue and glued with jewelry tears Something about those bright colors Would always make you feel better But now we speak with ruined tongues And the words we say arent meant for anyone Its just a mumbled sentence to a passing acquaintance But there was once you" He remembers her telling him on South Street about being upset/suicidal/etc. & just memories of things that made her feel better- like the bright colors on the mirror. At the end, he felt like he didn't know her any more. she had changed, she was scared, she wanted to die. & those words were ONLY exchanged between him & her. "You said you hate my suffering And you understood And youd take care of me You'd always be there Well where are you now?" She killed herself, and took herself away from him. "Haligh, haligh, a lie, haligh The plans were never finalized But left to hang like yarn and twine Dangling before my eyes" They had plans, but since she killed herself- he's left with all the broken plans. "As you tear and tear your hair from roots From that same head you have twice removed now A lock of hair you said would prove Our love would never die" She was frustrated with it all, & at one point gave him a lock of her hair and promised their love wouldn't die. "And I sing and sing of awful things The pleasure that my sadness brings As my fingers press onto the strings In yet another clumsy chord" His music brings him pleasure & a bit of release, but his music is inspired by all the bad things that have happened. poetic irony, you could say. "Haligh, haligh, an awful lie This weight will now be satisfied I'm gonna give you only one reply I know not who I am" He's confused. & i belieeeve that by "this weight will now be satisfied" he's thinking about following her by committing suicide himself. "But I talk in the mirror To the stranger that appears Our conversations are circles Always one sided Nothing is clear Except we keep coming back To this meaning that I lack He says the choices were given Now you must live them Or just not live But do you want that? " He loves her. But the whole relationship was a lie, He doesn't understand anything anymore- & all he can think of is following in her footsteps. does this make sense to anyone else.? |
