if definitly is talking about religion, im leaning toward directly christain, allthough it may also be directed at other religions to. it sounds like he is mocking religion, and the people who believe in it. in the verses he starts lifting it up like its positive, but then drags it down and thats what the whole chorus is about. -"Hold your grandmother's bible to your breast, Gonna put it to the test,You wanted it to be blessed" hold your beliefs and traditions close, cuz they'll fail when put to the test, even though you want it to be true. --"And in your heart,You know it to be true, You know what you gotta do,They all depend on you" in your imaginary way you think its true (scarcastic because its not), you know you have to give it up, [dont understand the they all part] -"There is no escape,From the slave catcher's songs, For all of the loved ones gone, Forever�s not so long" cant excape from hymms (song by slave catchers(christians who take away your freedom)), then mocking of eternity in heaven with those passed --"And in your soul,They poked a million holes, But you never let them show, Come on its time to go" in your beliefs, others have shown you the holes and shortcomings of it, but you pretend and act they dont exist even though it wears on you, come on its time to give them up. --"Yet you already know, How this will end" you know how your beliefs will fall apart -"Now you've seen his face, And you know that there's a place in the sun, For all that you've done, For you and your children,No longer shall you need" /mocking/ yah, youve seen God, heaven is real... --"You always wanted to believe, Just ask and you�ll receive, Beyond your wildest dreams...Yet you already know, How this will end" go ahead and believe in the health and weath gospel. but you know how it really is. also, if you look at his other songs, alot of them have the same general meaning (and sound, but i love the music so i dont care if the recycle beats and chord patterns). he seams to have a great deal of knowledge in the christain faith, as if he grew up in sunday school, but left and rejected the church when he got older, and mocks those who still follow God. if you put all his other songs in this context they all make sence, and is you look at all his other songs alone, then seem to fit this interpretation. this kinda sucks, because i love the music, and his style of singing, and i am a dedicated follower of Jesus...i really hope i am wrong in my interpretation of his music. |
