After the Burial – The Fractal Effect Lyrics 16 years ago
this song is about the false promises of religion and using your own faculties and god given mind to discover your own destiny and find truth for yourself instead of letting others who control the masses from a seat of power to do it for you in an inauthentic way.

this could also be related to any other establishment serving as an "easy way out".

Norma Jean – Murphy Was An Optimist Lyrics 17 years ago
your interpretation is the closest to correct out of these 4, but then again songs are also made to be interpreted in a subjective manner as well.

"murphy" is code name for alcohol, so you can say, "is murphy coming to the party?" in front of people and they think you're talking about a person.

hence: pull up that chair and "suck down" that trouble (referring to alcohol).

when it says "i don't want to kill you anymore", i think the lyrics might be speaking of when you "kill" a bottle or in other words finish the last drops.

the last verses are obviously his realization that while murphy (alcohol) IS an "optimist" and can subdue your pain for the moment, eventually "hell follows with murphy", meaning it can't bring about anything but more misery.

it could be interpreted as sin i guess... but if you read it and understand the terminology it's obvious that using alcohol as a crutch is what he is talking about, and how "murphy was an optimist" but only made more shit hit the fan.
