@[david11516:455] I did most of my interpreting with a non-biased approach first, and in doing so did not privy myself to his interviews. My initial bullets were based on simplistic interpretation from only one dimension. I have since seen and read interviews with Hozier and would concur with the wrong turn. That being said, the beauty of interpretation is that no one can actually be wrong. People find what they want in artistic expressions. It really is the beauty in art. Its all in the eye of the beholder, eh? |

Although I am not done interpreting the song, I will point out some things I think other interpreters have missed. 1- I think the video as skewed people's view and analysis of the song 2- While the homosexual clash with the church seems to fit the song, the gender is specifically stated as female in the lyrics and interacting with the artist 3- I believe the lyrics need to be corrected to say "My church offers no absolution" not "My church offers no absolutes" 4- The theme I seem to be gathering is that there is - Guilt for committing a sin - The sin I see is Lust (most likely premarital sex) - He is looking for acceptance to heaven, but feels it's fruitless because his church offers "...no ABSOLUTION" - I am also seeing where he is conflicted with this sin and being a good memeber of the church - Leading me into the thought that he has a sexual addiction which makes it feel impossible for him to not be in sin leading around to the born sick thought Again I'm not done yet, but just some thoughts that may shake up the discussion a little. |

| From what I gather of the song its all about an individual who is surrounded by the facade of happiness via materialism, and it is tearing him/her apart. So when that individual attempt to be a genuine person and yearn for something worth having that person is shut down and blown off. Making him/her feel insignificant and everyday that person is attempting to ignore what it is they are telling him/her but can't shake it. | |

| I see a different exapmle here that maybe no one else saw although ill admit i dindnt read all the post (thats a hell of alot plus trexor never shutting up) but what I see that angels are opbviously watching what we do and confused as to why "father" gaves us reason and free will and we make terrible things such as weapons and things and the reference to eden in which adam and eve consumed the forbbiden fruit and they SHARED it hence divide in two ... we take our reason and free will and make things of evil and then share them or divide them so that we dont feel guilty or something to that affect (misery loves company)... if were going to sin we'd perfer someone sin with us right? thats what i saw | |

to me i kind of see every song on this album to have relation with his mother which makes sense considering 27 years is roughly 10,000 days but as with almost evey song ive heard there are double meanings often times political attacks... but then again i could be reading into it to much but truely the only one i have a hard time putting any part of his mother in is the pot... anyways i almost agree with commander micheal except i see it as his mother keeping him from the "darker side" wether it be himself or satan because of his mothers strong belief in god... which you have to admit at least in the morals of almost every religion there are good morals or things to follow reguardless of faith |

| What I got out of vicarious after SEVERAL listens plus the veiwing of the short cgi movie made for this song and listening to the documentry and commentary and what not I have come to the conclusion that the song is about being so hypnotized into watching tv and how everything is about destruction and death and we enjoy watching it and forget that we are apart of the world thats crumbling and what i saw in the storyline of the video was that in the end the main character who was watching this devastation over a dry lake bed eventually became the victim of the story he seemed to hypnotized by.... so in a sense we are all apart of this world and sitting back thinking that every tragedy in no way affects us or ever will is down right stupid.... thats what i took from it (pretty much all the same principles of what others have said ive or take one or two points) | |
