I agree with the point of view that says that it is an inner battle within one person. I believe the rose is a metaphor for beauty, as well as strength - basically positivity. the first two verses seem to be told from a self-destructive or destructive way of thinking, "don't disturb the beast ... while he's feeling on the rose" and "bend around the wind, silently" both allude to feeling small and insignificant. I believe this person is 'sacrificing' themselves to some extent, submitting to even the force of the wind and doing it silently - not being allowed to complain or ask for help. As the song progresses, it has a beautiful structure, beginning with 'i am, i will' and ending with 'i will, i am' or 'my will, i am'. There is a message here of creating a situation of at-peace-ness with yourself and surroundings. Just BE. then you have the power to do - i am, then i will... this is a significant peace of the artwork to me and i dont think its a mistake that these pieces are repeated in the form that they are :). I also think one of the most beautiful lines in the song is where he sings "Till I, Rose, I roared aloud, here I will, I am" because the word "rose" is being used in 3 different ways right here. first, it is the image, the metaphor of the Rose, the symbol of beauty and goodness within this person's soul. secondly the line can be read as "I, Rose" as if the person is saying "I am Rose", declaring themselves to be a being of light. thirdly it can be read as "I rose", the most obvious meaning - The person rose above their own destructive or self-destructive ways. The song goes on to see the person defiantly making statements against negativity and destructrive forces that s/he was submitting to in the first part of the song. I believe the violins sounding so differrent but harmonising so perfectly are also a metaphor for the way in which a person can 'alchemize' the parts that make up themselves to create a beautiful person. Hope im not talking smack :) hope someone can draw something from this. This song is written up on my wall in permanent marker and has been there for 5 years. i love it. |

I don't think your angle on the pusy eating is wrong, but I think it should be said that this song has some much deeper meanings. I think the artist is exploring the nature of a man, or more accurately someone who is a kind of predator. The "each time i pull it apart, i get disgusted" could be the feeling of self-disgust that the person feels. I don't think that the person who is 'saying' these things is a predator themself - but they are addressing the part of themselves, asking it "what makes it so good to lie, just to lick a bit". The way he enjoys sex disturbs him and disgusts him. I think that this is also echoed in the lyrics "take it, enlarge it, become it" which has an obvious meaning, but also he 'becomes' this sexual drive that is being seen as a monster in his own head/being. Finally, the point of the song, in my opinion, is that the reason for all of this is a sick relationship. they've had sex, but they cant look at eachother. I think that the way (is it John Davis?) sings 'you look at me but you look away' is meant to sound sad.. almost as though he's looking for aproval from his partner but does not get it, and then the next time they do it, he feels disgusted again. It voices the silent pain of having sex when there isn't any 'true love'. |
