Oddly enough, this is the song that got me into Maiden. I'd had a few random tracks on my ipod for a while, this one included, but I rarely listened to them. Last year I took a vacation to Scotland and while I was there I remembered this track and listened to it while I was traveling through the Highlands. It's a bit cheesy but it creates a good vibe and it got me to take a closer look at Maiden. Within a month I bought tickets for my brother and I to see them in Chicago, and they melted our faces off. I've seen Metallica, Black Sabbath with Dio and Ozzy, and Judas Priest live and all of them rocked but Somewhere Back in Time this summer was the best show I've ever seen. They hooked me the old fashioned way, with a live performance, and now I'm a Maiden fan for life. Up the Irons. |

I had no idea this song was based on the GK Chesterson hymn until we actually sang it one Sunday in church. I was freaking out in our pew at the realization that I was singing a Maiden song in church, which was quite confusing for my family until I could explain the connection. The hymn is based on an English folk tune called "King's Lynn" with words by Chesterson. As others have said, it's this kind of subtlety and the ability to blend with themes like Crowley that makes Maiden great - creatively as well as musically. |

The inspiration for this song, as people have said, was one of Steve Harris's nightmares. The imagery in the lyrics, however, draws heavily on the poem Tam O'Shanter by Robert Burns. In it, a man has too much to drink and rides home from the tavern late at night, stumbling upon a Satanic ritual taking place in a churchyard in the process. Given Maiden's affinity for the British literary tradition it makes sense that they would incorporate some of Burns' themes into this, their iconic metal anthem. |
