Kevin Devine – Brother's Blood Lyrics 13 years ago
This is by far his best work. Aside from the strong message and clear visualizations, take a look at the alliteration and the fact that the majority of the lyrics fit into the pattern for iambic quadrameter. I mean who does that? Really good writers of poetry, that's who. And then he's able to put some killer guitar in there and make the whole thing sound like the most badass song ever. This is why Kevin Devine is a lyrical genius and I hope he's around for a long time to keep making songs like this.

i feel like the line would either be:
the one that is calling my name is telling "calm down"
or "come home" based on the context

I think this song is flat out amazing and I could listen to it on repeat for days.

My interpretation of the "drowning babies" stanza is the desire to preserve innocence. As a rule, babies represent innocence and purity, however in the song, they're crying. This stands to show that something bad in the world has upset them, they're losing their innocence. The only way to keep them from losing more and save them from further suffering in the world is to end their life, but this act would upset the mothers and thus create more loss of innocence and suffering, so he doesn't do it.

In an odd way, I think his willingness to commit such an awful crime actually shows a lot of strength and self-sacrifice.

Crazy how backwards that ends up being

i think this song desicribes the cylces of depression perfectly. how you get stuck in this idea of self-loathing that you would do anything to get out of, but you just can't seem to. and then you see all the other problems of the world, and how yours just don't compare, but it only makes things worse because instead of making you feel better about your issues, you just feel weak for not being able to deal with them. and the whole process just becomes one endless repeating pattern that you can't seem to break.

this song is absolute perfection.

i have to disagree with you skijorn, i do think the song could be about a love from childhood times. the reference to the sun and fountains makes me think of playing outside as children during summer. although, i do feel like the song has more of a feel of two kids being friends forever and always caring about each other, but nothing ever coming out of it, and then as they grew up, they grew apart and now that they're grown, he's realized how much he cared for her and says he's happy for her and in doing so, is moving on, or at least trying to.

also, i think comparing the color gold to mediocrity is brilliant
