I thought it was about two lovers who for some reason are separated (broken sweethearts who sleep apart) and the narrator has trouble sleeping. Hence he needs sleeping pills (two tabs which dissolve on his tongue) to act as shepherds to herd the sheep (counting sheep being a way to try to sleep). Also he's imagining being with her as he lies in his bed - he tries to spoon her and can almost feel her pulse. Unsure about the soap bit or the gold fatless finger, but it's a lovely song. |

| Sounds like he called someone common and they didn't take it too well... | |

The idea for this song was basically ripped from 'Catch 22' by Joseph Heller. In the book, a young pilot named Nately falls in love with a whore who doesn't love him back. He becomes obsesse with her, spending all of his money on her, but she gets bored of him, and refuses to sleep with him any more. Hence, Nately has to disguise himself to see her. So, to match this up with the lyrics: 1) Nately "falls in love with a lady of the night" 2) The whore always wants to "run away from [him]" 3) Nately has to "wear a beard, and a suit and tie" or disguise to hide his youthfulness, and see his whore. 4) He often sees his whore "going home with some other guy" Captain Black often buys Nately's whore to torment him 5)The whore thinks Nately "is sad" I'm not criticising the Wombats for using this idea just pointing outthe similarities betwen my favourite song and favourite book. :D |
