The song is about ADOPTION. Sarah McLachlan is adopted. The above lyrics is not how she usually sings it. Take out the verse about the sun and remembering the good times. I know the song very well. I listened to it on repeat freshman year of college when I found my birthmother. Also, it should be "You gave me everything you had, you gave me LIFE". They have "you gave me LIGHT". "I'm so afraid to love you, but more afraid to lose. Clinging to a past that doesn't let me choose." It's very common for adoptees to not want to love their birthmothers for fear of rejection. A past that didn't let her choose was her not being able to have a say in her birthmother giving her up for adoption. The other version of the song was changed so that a wider audience could relate to it, but her heart was remembering her birthmother when she wrote the song. |
