Wilco – I Am Trying to Break Your Heart Lyrics 15 years ago
I'd like to point out that at the end, I am pretty sure he says "I bottomed out in the big city blinking / what was I thinking when I let go of you". Bottomed out, as in hit rock bottom. As in he is an alcoholic looking back on a failed relationship. He can't believe he let go of the woman for booze, or maybe he just can't believe he let go of the booze...

Yeah you gotta see this done live. The way they transition between the musical melodies is just AMAZING. I couldn't believe that they'd be able to pull it off live until I saw it with my own two eyes and heard it with my own two ears.

Wilco – A Shot in the Arm Lyrics 15 years ago
I've always thought this song was about two people in a relationship who are addicted to drugs, then one of them (her) wants to get clean, so she is getting ready to leave him. The references to walking by the sea and falling into the sea seem pretty clear to me, that is often how heroine addicts describe the feeling of getting high.

To me, this song is about his wishing he could just erase a past failed relationship. Like, if he could just kill her and bury her, it would be like it never happened. The whole song just screams "failure" to me--it is the fact that things that didn't work out that kills him, rather than missing that actual person.

Also, I think this song is about both alcoholism and a relationship he has had with someone. Alcoholics often have horrible interpersonal relationships because they are somewhat unpredictable--all happy and buzzing at one point, then pissed off (and hung-over) the next. Anyway, I think Tweedy really loved this girl, but because he was a boozer he treated her like sh!t. Then he sobered up and now he realizes how poorly he treated her and wishes he would have gotten sober for her. I think "I am trying to break your heart" is actually a reference to the LISTENER--he is trying to break OUR hearts by telling us his sad story.

I love the version on Kicking Television. I can literally feel Tweedy's longingess reaching out through the speakers at the end, when he wails "what was I thinking when I let go of you?" It gives me chills.

Count me in as LOVING the guitar solo on the Kicking Television version. Absolutely incredible--I have never quite heard a guitar come alive like that...my only complaint is that I wish it were longer!

Wilco – At Least That's What You Said Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is about the end stages of a relationship, where it is painful to stay together but you just can't break it off entirely. Then the rest of the song is a musical interpretation of that. The music starts off really jagged and in your face, when the breakup stage is just beginning and the feelings are too much to bear, and then by the end it just slowly dies off, like a bad relationship does. Great song.
