Ben Folds Five – Lullabye Lyrics 6 years ago
I think this song is drawing a parallel between that flight and the crashing of the American Pie which killed Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper, otherwise known as "The Day the Music Died," Feb 3, 1959. There were three that "took flight, that night," in the song. "Uncle Richard" could be the Big Bopper, whose real name is Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr.. Uncle Richard may very well be a reference to Valens, not to mention that during the piano solo, Ben plays a strong musical quotation of Valens' "La Bamba." As for "James Earl Jones," there is no obvious direct connection, although his father, actor Robert Earl Jones, celebrated his birthday on Feb 3rd. As a final possible link, early in his career, Ben was understudy for the role of Buddy Holly's band, the Crickets' bass player, Joe B. Mauldin, in a small production of "The Buddy Holly Story." The seeds of this song may well have been planted at that time.

The Long Winters – Delicate Hands Lyrics 17 years ago
I've created my own artificial meaning to the song, and most of the lyrics have to be stretched to make it all work, but it really gets to me if he's singing about a twin sister who died at birth.
