I always thought that this song was about a person who was abused as a child and is looking back at memories of it. “Every view they hold on you’s, a piano out of tune” means that the person was always thought of as something worthless, and unwanted. “Broken windows on the past” means that the persons view of the past has been damaged in some way, that they see their memories with hatred. This idea is also supported by “your memory’s one-sided” and “all the feelings are of shame”, the later suggesting that the person may blame herself for what happened. I think that “damage the dream” means that this persons hopes and dreams were prevented from being accomplished, whether physically or mentally. An alternative to this would be that the ‘dream’ of having a child and raising it happily has been ignored, and the child’s upbringing had been damaged through abuse. This is only an idea though, and I know this song can be interpreted in many ways, but it just sounds like remembering an abusive childhood to me, I’m not entirely sure why. Either way, it’s and awesome song! |
