Bloc Party – Always New Depths Lyrics 16 years ago
depression's too easy! There's certainly that sense of angst you might attribute to depression and suicide, but i think you've tried to pull out too much of a literal meaning.
I think this song's definitely about something he's done and maybe regretting and getting bitter about, and that may be something specific, but you could certainly take what you want from this song and apply it elsewhere, which is what makes it so great!
one of bloc party's best, easily.

I love the references to change and time in this song, and how it fits perfectly with the tempo change at the end, which could be linked to the transition from summer to autumn.

someone said that the reference to serotonin may relate to depression problems.
not really.
low levels are associated with depression but we all feel a bit groggy when we get up. food releases endorphines which releases serotonin and makes us feel better. this song is about breakfast in which case it basically is refferring to how having breakfast will make you feel better.

very pretentious way of looking at breakfast really but that's almost definitely what hes on about when he mentions neurones and serotonin.

haha, we just had a psychology lesson regarding this so i had to come and put it down :)

I think the title of this must refer to his regards towards the state of mind he felt after this particular break-up. In which case he seems to fluctuate from despising the person that shunned him to missing them and wanting them in back

OR

what is more likely, he is trying to convince himself that he is over this person, repeating over and over that he bears no grudge, but at the same trying trying to pick fault at her to make things easier - although eventually he concedes he wants her back.

i think that to be honest the meaning of this song is quite vague. Though it makes references to cats once or twice i don't think there is any contrived meaning behind that, and it seems here he has definitely chosen words that best suit the music. The imagery in this song is particularly haunting however.

Through the coppice and the chaparral
The thickets thick with mold
The bracken and the brier
Catchweed into the fold

those lines sound amazing
