Scylla and Charybdis are in Greek mythology, Ishtar is in Assyrian and Babylonian myth, Inanna is Sumerian, and Ereshkigal is the goddess of the dead in all of the Mesopotamian myths (which include Assyrian, Babylonian, Sumerian, and Akkadian). from wikipedia: The phrase "between Scylla and Charybdis" has come to mean being in a state where one is between two dangers and moving away from one will cause you to be in danger of the other. "Between Scylla and Charybdis" is the origin of the phrase "between the rock and the whirlpool" (the rock upon which Scylla dwelt and the whirlpool of Charybdis) and may also be the genesis of the phrase "between a rock and a hard place". and also from wikipedia: Inanna is the goddess of mating and war. She's generally depicted wandering the streets, stealing men to have sex with them. Ishtar is basically her Assyrian and Babylonian counterpart, and her cult involved sacred prostitution. And yeah, it's a bit anti-christ, mainly here: "Desires I was loath to lose To the virgin-bloodied priests Whose lord fantasied on Magdalene And sought to savour Her as beast Her aching sex A rose undone As mine in tears and spasms wrung" Ebon Nemesis, slain Jericho's stone Has built thee a marbled stair By candlelight to Eden and a Serpentine throne Where ravens rape the tenanting angels there |
