| Elton John – Grey Seal Lyrics

The grey seal is a mystery. I always interpreted it as a symbol for someone like Einstein, etc. who unlocked the
mysteries of the universe and was a great thinker who looked at evidence and reality and was not persuaded by myths and
superstitions. Bernie compares the lack of education he had growing up and is now trying to make up for it by reading and experiencing. On the Yellow Brick Road album this song follows "This song has no title" which has a similar theme. The "mission bells" represents organized religion and how in early history of western civilization distorted our view of the universe and repressed ideas. |

I think its about someone's desire to leave the modern world and live a simpler life and commune with nature, etc. but he can't because of responsibilities, etc. The "man ... grows old every day" is the singer - trapped by the restrictions society has put on him. He'd rather be a hammer (a doer who has control over his actions/destiny) and not the nail (and feeling powerless by others). He'd rather be a sparrow (free as a bird) and not a snail (crawling and eking out a survival). The swan is the perfect symbol of nature. He is striving to be that. |

| Bob Dylan – A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Lyrics

Racism ("white man who walked a black dog", "black branch with blood that kept dripping" - lynching?) , pollution ("pellets of poison... flooding their waters"), poverty/inequality of wealth ("where the people are many and their hands are all empty", "highway of diamonds with nobody on it"), war("...guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children"), drugs("young girls she gave me a rainbow"), etc. are some of the many themes.
The 'hard rain' is a symbol that some day justice will prevail and wash away all the evil in the world i.e. like a Noah's flood. The "blue-eyed son" is someone who has witnessed the evil/violence/injustice in the world and yet is untainted and who's mission now is to right these wrongs. The song is also a message to the listener to become like the blue-eyed son and help make it a better world. |

I interpret this song as someone who is currently down on his luck and singing to someone who is currently well off. He's basically saying every dog has his day and someday he will be up and that other someone will be down. I personally relate it to a class struggle theme where someone poor is saying to someone rich they'll get theirs someday. Alot of the songs on Viva La Vida have similar revolutionary themes i.e. king now sweeping the streets, street people outside looking in, ghosts wandering aimlessly who once were living in society, etc. |
