Nerina Pallot – Watch Out Billie Lyrics 17 years ago
"We're all prairie children brought up on the lies of the past"- so true, I think she's saying how our opinions and the way we see the world is influenced by the things we are told in our childhood. Perhaps, in this context, it means how we are told of fame (and it being good) and famous people and, therefore, want to be like them- like Billie did.

Some of the lyrics seem to be applicable to more than the perils or the pursuit of fame. Like, "we get fed something, but we don't want", I feel that this is very honest, how people always seem to want what they cannot have and when they are offered something, which is may be good, they turn it down in the hope of something better ("own heaven").

Whilst the song hosts some good ideas, it doesn't have quite such a good sound. Although I suppose the poppiness is fitting, it's a little false cheery, pointing out that fame might seem enticing but it's not as easy as it looks. This song, in my opinion, is so much more subtle than another song with the same theme- "When I Grow Up" by the Pussycat Dolls.

Nerina Pallot – Geek Love Lyrics 17 years ago
I'd like to think that this song is about her boyfriend (or whatever he is) being overly philosophical, doubting everything, even her own exsistence ("you're accusing me, sir, I'm not here")- to which she responds frankly, "I'm not on the moon". Furthermore, she tells him that if she can't assume anything ("I don't presume to know shit about you") then, for all she knows, he might have a "wife".

So, whilst they can't find an explanation for why they're there, or why they're "in love", they go along with it and accept, that whilst questioning the universe is fun ("I know that perplexity is a wonderful thing"), reality does exsist because of the evidence that is experiance and the overwhelming simplicity of nature ("Just take me home, come on and get me undressed").

Or it's about losing her virginity and not life, the universe and everything.

Nerina Pallot – Sophia Lyrics 17 years ago
When I first heard this song, I didn't think it was Nerina's best, but after a few listens, it really grew on me.
"Learn the language from the words when I speak"- I love this line, I think it means that she's finding that she's learning about love from being in love.
The song seems to argue that "passion" and love is every bit as legitimate as knowledge as "science" ("It's the science of a soul"). Perhaps that's another reason why it's directed to 'Sophia'(meaning wisdom), telling traditional intellectuals that knowledge of love is as important as any other knowledge, if not moreso.
"Sophia" is described as having "newborn eyes", this could be because "Sophia" (representing rationalism) is opening her eyes to love. "Sophia" may have been round for a long time, like rationality, as only her eyes are "newborn".
Then the words "I'm learning that some things I can't go without
And one of them is him" just prompt the question- what are those other things? Maybe this can be linked to the idea of love versus logic- whilst she needs basic things like food and water to live, and with good reason, she also needs "him" and there doesn't appear to be any (traditional) logical explanation for that. Maybe this then means that love does not abide by the same rules as other logic ("it's a fire I cannot put out").
Whateverways, it's a beautiful song and 'Sophia', with that pronounciation, is now one of my favourite names.
(Wow, I wrote a lot)
