| Frightened Rabbit – The Loneliness and the Scream Lyrics

Yeah, but what is it about? I think it's the frustration of a guy who keeps screwing up his relationships. He stumbles from one to another, never starts the relationship, never the one to end it. Given that, he's not talking about God in the second half. He's falling down, finding love, not God. |

I think it's literal. That's kind of his style. It's about wanting to go somewhere nearby, not trendy, but better. |

I love the lyrics but I really don't know what they mean. To me, this reminds me of great dark science fiction, like the stories about people lost in space in huge dark deserted robotic hulks in the emptiness of space - like an Alastair Reynolds novel. Stuffed if I know why - maybe it's the combination of the music with the lyrics |

| Travis – Before You Were Young Lyrics

The phrase "before you were young" is a weird one. What does it mean? I actually get the feeling the whole J Smith album is a story told in reverse, starting with his suicide and going back to this point where a happier time is referenced. Maybe that's why the reference to things being reversed here: "before you were young", "take our cradles to the grave", "if you ever leave me come"... |

It's J. Smith on his slide down to deeper depression and ultimately suicide. The lyrics to this song are really sad. The song where he actually kills himself, "J. Smith", has lyrics that are kind of flippant and make fun of him. But this one is quite poignant |

Yeah, all the other songs are about depression and suicide, and this one seems different, but it's because it's from someone else's point of view. Almost like saying, Come on, cheer up, it's not all bad! |

This is such a melancholy album when you listen to the lyrics. Even this song, which sounds really upbeat, is about being depressed, which seems to be what every song on Ode to J. Smith is about |

Yep, great lyrics, great song. Continues on the dark theme of Ode to J. Smith. This seems to be about the feeling that you're trapped in your own life. Goes well with the songs about suicide on the album. This has a really melancholy sound to the chord progression too |

Wow, this is the second song about killing yourself on Ode to J. Smith. The first one being J. Smith |

| Arctic Monkeys – Crying Lightning Lyrics

Nah, Ritz17 got it right. Crying Lightning is a variant of Crying Wolf. The trick is you go to the ice cream van guy and say you've seen lightning over east and there's a storm coming any second. The idea is to make the ice cream guy think he's going to lose all his stock of ice cream (which will go to waste when everyone goes inside and the sunny day suddenly ends) and so is more likely to give out some free ice creams to the girl and all her friends.
So basically, he used to have fun with this devious chick, but he eventually figured out that she's a bit of a rotten apple! |

"White Robes" is a reference to the KKK I think. As in, the days of that crude sort of overt racism are gone, but although everyone's really politically correct now, maybe not that much has really changed? |

And who takes their own advice in life anyway? Just because you know it's not the best thing to do doesn't mean you're not going to do it anyway! Everyone has the capacity for self-destructive behaviour - it's part of being human! In fact, we also tend to do the wrong thing and then criticise others for doing the same thing - that's called hypocrisy! |

| Frightened Rabbit – Head Rolls Off Lyrics

I really see this as a rejection of religion (or at least Christianity), but an assertion that being an atheist doesn't mean you're amoral. He declares himself an unbeliever in the first verse "Jesus is just a Spanish boy's name / How come one man got so much fame? / To any me [I don't think it's "to enemy", that doesn't make much sense), it's pointless to anybody / That doesn't have faith / Give me the cloth and I'll wipe my face"
Then later on he talks about the house in the clouds and God and all his dead friends - it sounds to me like he's ridiculing the whole notion of an afterlife! Even the line "So you can burn me" seems like a provocation, kind of like "OK, so I'm a heretic but what are you going to do? Burn me at the stake?"
But the rest of the song is about how you shouldn't need religion, or a rulebook handed down by some supposedly perfect source to tell you how to act. We're all responsible for our own actions - we should understand that what we each do has an effect on everyone else and we should take ownership for our own actions, not justify them in the name of some mystical greater plan. |

| Frightened Rabbit – Floating in the Forth Lyrics

This song reminds me so much of Iain Banks' novel, The Steep Approach to Garbadale about a guy who can't get over his mother's suicide, and he constantly dreams of watching her creep out of the house wearing a massive coat, and as she walks away she keeps picking up rocks and putting them in all the pockets until whe gets to the loch. And she just keeps walking until she gets to the drop-off, and the last thing she sees before the icy water closes over head is gulls. But the book is about him getting over all this crap in his life, so the hopeful ending to the song kind of fits. I wonder if it was inspired by the book? Scottish author too, I think he's even from Glasgow? |

| Frightened Rabbit – The Modern Leper Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
I'd always assumed it was just about a guy who hates himself, or is a general screw-up, but he has this woman who keeps believing in him though he can't figure out why. But I like the drug addiction part, especially as he likens himself to a leper. When you think about it, drug addicts are like the modern version of lepers - outcast, abandoned and pretty much left for dead by the community. Lost causes.
The Midnight Organ Fight is one of the albums of the last 10 years - breathtakingly good! |
