This song is one of my favorites by Incubus. I've always been a fan but I gained even more respect for Brandon after reading he is also a Jeff Buckley fan. Ever since I read that in a lot of their songs I can hear how he was inspired by Jeff's vocals... I don't really know the meaning of this song, but it seems like he is talking about a relationship that isn't going good but he is kind of reassuring himself that she is just going through a phase... he doesn't want to give up on her. It has a happy/sad feeling to it. |

Another view of this song could be about addiction (although I am not sure of ever reading him having a drinking or drug problem) The first verse seems like he is saying the "monster" is awake again (the cravings) and won't go away until he get's his fix or until all that he has is gone. It's that satisfaction you crave being an addict but never achieving it. Then the lyric about him forgetting the pain... and the last verse could maybe be about choosing either the drugs/alcohol or getting clean and being with the one he loves? I also think the last verse is about a relationship with someone who isn't treating you right but you love them so much it's too hard to actually leave. Whatever the meaning, I love this song but wish it was longer :( It has a beautiful sound to it. |
