This song could be interpreted to be a narrative from the perspective of a schizophrenic or sufferer of some other psychotic illness. There is a famous story of a girl (can be found on youtube) who had schizophrenia and believed she was abducted and taken into outer space and then brought back and remained in contact with aliens hence why the title of the song may be called "spaceman". A line from the song to suggest this would be Next thing I knew, they ripped me from my bed" suggesting the aliens or whoever the character is imagining, is abducting the protagonist. However, this first verse also alludes the story of someone in a mental institution as the second line reads "And then they took my blood type" suggesting the character is in some form of care yet the line that follows alludes the constant theme through out; ("its all in my mind") with the line "It left a strange impression in my head". The use of the words "in my head" draws attention to the theme that this person is deluded as well as the words "strange impression" creating a sense of abnormality in the mind of this character as well as suggesting that either the character began losing his mind from this point which takes us back to the first line "it started with a low light" or that the character was already deluded and began his awakening after his therapy as shown by: You know that I was hoping That I could leave this star-crossed world behind But when they cut me open I guess I changed my mind The next part further supports the space/alien theme of the song; "I might have just flown too far from the floor" suggests some form of spacecraft and "'cause they're calling me by my name" suggests aliens are talking to the character i.e. voices in the head - a common symptom of schizophrenia. "And they're zipping white light beams" - a self-explanatory line which merely furthers the spacey theme of the song. I'd interpret the rest but im supposed to do a massive piece of coursework so im just procrastinating by drawing my attention to something cooler - the killers haha. hope u enjoyed reading these thoughts and interpretations. i'd love to hear your thoughts.
