I think the song might be about valuing the wrong things in life. At this day in age we are all so materialistic and we don't cherish some things the way we should. Also maybe the influence that our society has on us which makes us believe that money is the most important thing. Like before entering society you have these dreams of being this great person but then you get caught up in the glamour of everything and now the most important things are brand name sunglasses and clothes. "I did go from wanting to be someone now/I'm drunk and wearing flip flops on fifth avenue" "Once you've fallen from classical virtue/Won't have a soul for to wake up and hold you" Maybe saying once you've come to value all of these things over the important stuff you'll just be lonely. "And all these poses oh how can you blame me/Life is a game and true is a trophy" Meaning that because our society is so incredibly acquisitive you can't blame him for valuing all of those nonessential items and treating life and love as things that don't really matter. I think the song is about losing a lover rather than a family member because of the like "when darling you were mine, all mine." it's a heartbreakingly sad song but so beautiful. |
