I also thinks its about a couple who have had a long distance relationship for awhile. I think the guy has been on tour for awhile and the girl has been awaiting his arrival back home and its the last few days before he gets home and its hurting more than ever because they know how close they are to being with each other again. "the drive home never seemed this long before" is him saying I've driven down this road a million times before,come home after a dozen tours,but this time the trip is so much longer because I finally have something to look forward to. and he's telling her he doesn't know what will happen to them when he gets home,but he's hoping everything is like it was before he left. just my two cents(: |

I think this song has an underlying meaning of making it big in the industry. like its obviously about wanting to be with this girl and experiencing all these things with her. but the part where he says "be california's best (all I ask,all I ask)" kinda makes me think of LA and how many big things are going on there.and he wants to be the best of it. and aswell as "please don't tell me that i'm dreaming" is like maybe she told him it was all a dream in terms of the music industry thing and them being together and he's trying to tell her don't doubt me and don't doubt us.we're gonna make it together. and as some other things that support the LA concept "down and to the left" I live in san diego and we're down and to the left of the united states,bordering mexico and all...but LA is also down and to the left of the nation. idk its probably all bullshit but that's my take on it? |

I aswell think its about drinking away the pain.he knows he has no control over the situation,but his drinking he CAN control...and maybe that's a peace of mind to him (ya know the only thing he has control over at this point in his life) and when he says, "well, it’s hiding on the other side of the world somewhere making someone’s day so much brighter well, for you, you are wherever the sunlight is" I think he's saying the light/sun is no longer in his life because the girl is gone.and maybe she's somewhere out in the world makind some other guy just as happy as she made the singer.and his life is dark because she's no longer around just my perspective(: |

I think you both nailed it. he just really wants this girl to love him and be his and she doesn't want that,so now he's hoping she'll forever be alone and not happy unless she is with him. amazing song,regardless of the meaning. |
