A-Ha – Stay On These Roads Lyrics 13 years ago
Man, this is one I really love! It's so simple of form, yet the... I don't want to call it a scream or a wail, as that'd not be doing it justice. The... soul, it is so brutally beautiful. Morton Harket is the example I have always aspired to set as a vocalist. It literally pulls the heart-strings when finally those words emerge. Portland.

Savage Garden – To The Moon And Back Lyrics 15 years ago
Sometimes there is a chick who breaks all the rules. A rose amongst the filth, so to speak. She comes from the dirt, yet "smells as sweet", as Shakespeare would say. She doesn't see herself as the gem she is. An old drinkin' buddy called it the "White Trash Pedigree". He was a rather simple man, but he understood how the world works for some.

A-Ha – Summer Moved On Lyrics 15 years ago
Maybe it's about moving on, while others stay where they are. Stay or go, Summer keeps movin' on, with nobody else around.

UNKLE – Burn My Shadow (feat. Ian Astbury) Lyrics 15 years ago
The vocalist is from the metal band "The Cult". So perfect in terms of tone and voice.

Queensrÿche – Silent Lucidity Lyrics 15 years ago
Amen brotha'. Fully agree. Heard this over 15 years ago, maybe closer to 20. Made sense once I heard about hallucinogens.

A-Ha – The Sun Always Shines on TV Lyrics 15 years ago
Seems it's about someone who is hoping for a better tomorrow, yet finds only darkness and despair. Nothing within will shine, yet the sun always rises in dreams.

Chris Isaak – Wicked Game Lyrics 15 years ago
This song has spawned more beach-based erotic fantasies than Blue Lagoon. Rick on, Crooner!

Audioslave – Shadow On The Sun Lyrics 15 years ago
Yeah, a lot of the songs are pretty easy to play. I believe it to be one of those situations of beauty in simplicity. Also, I'd like to put it out there that Tom Morello has a style rather unique. I challenge you to put every bit of pinch harmonics in there like he does. Dude picks and slides with an allen wrench! Don't hate. Criticize.

Oingo Boingo – Reptiles and Samurai Lyrics 15 years ago
In terms of RPGs, a reptilian samurai is a wholly believable concept.

Portishead – Wandering Star Lyrics 16 years ago
Beth Gibbons' voice makes me want to make sultry, passionate love in a gritty foreign country inn to a bawdry lass waitress. It is just sooo sexy. Her voice is a combination of Annie Lennox, Eddie Vedder, Tracy Chapman, and Lisa Loeb. Plays through my head every time I spend a gentle moment.

Maroon 5 – This Love Lyrics 16 years ago
Makes me think of the one that got away. She was the one, until she went away. "To love, and love lost."

Simply Red – Stars Lyrics 16 years ago
Mick Hucknall takes a simple soul tune and makes it truly awe inspiring. Makes me wonder why he isn't as well known as Steve Perry from Journey. He is a legit "The Voice". He conveys the pain and loss left when the ride is over. You can literally feel the hole in his heart. Kudos.

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm not going to go over the tune word by word. I think that is counter to the message. This song makes me cry. It is so mournful. Like it is the last song of the dying. It wears me out. It wears me out.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd – Blue On Black Lyrics 16 years ago
Stellar guitar work. Makes me want to do the blues every time.

Matthew Good Band – Strange Days Lyrics 16 years ago
Maybe he's talking about hopelessness. The feeling of knowing no matter what you do, it is futile. The rest of the world moves on, and your life stays shitty. Do what you can, while you can, until the day when you can't.

submissions
Gary Jules – Mad World (Tears for Fears cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
It is so sad. Not many songs make me feel like crying. This, and "Strange Days" by Matthew Good Band. Excellent rendition. You make a hell of a music version, Gary.

Neil Diamond – Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show Lyrics 16 years ago
There's a Youtube video with him and Johnny Cash on Cash's TV show/special. They be Superfriends like Bowie and Mercury. Would give my left pinky to have seen it live (Going out to all you budding time-travel technicians. I mean it.)

Alanis Morissette – Uninvited Lyrics 16 years ago
She sees this dude, right? A scoundrel type. A pirate and a rogue. Like Lando hit on her. Such sophistication and charm is hard to resist, yet is still not entirely welcome. Stoic squirms when he gets caught with two ladies on the spot. He can't resist her, and she almost can't resist him. Predator/prey behavior at its most raw. Not allowed.

submissions
Maroon 5 – She Will Be Loved Lyrics 16 years ago
Always makes me think of the women I said, in so many words, "Tap on my window, knock on my door, I want to make you feel disrespectful.". They were never worth the effort or sacrifice. Bitches.

The Allman Brothers Band – Midnight Rider Lyrics 16 years ago
I played this tune for my buddy when he was truly "on the lamb", and it made his spirits rise. Dude had a buck and a ride. He wasn't a violent felon, just an unlucky drug doer. The Midnight Rider slips on by into the night.

Ennio Morricone – The Ecstasy of Gold Lyrics 16 years ago
Dude Motherfucker finds the motherlode, realizes it, and makes his move. Motherfucker has no name save Clint. Brutal.

Soundgarden – The Day I Tried to Live Lyrics 16 years ago
My opinion, in agreement or otherwise with any other who came be fore is as such: Dude wakes up. Sees his shitty situation. Realizes the only way he can win is to become the reason the world sucks, and to learn from it. To make the changes through being the reason they need to made. "One more time around." History repeating itself, with the amp to 11. IMHO. Should have stayed in bed. Pricks.

Mike And The Mechanics – All I Need Is A Miracle Lyrics 16 years ago
Don't rag on Mike, man! Dude was in Genesis. I think it may be a bit of a wistful reference to not being with Genesis anymore. They made great music. Hell, Peter Gabriel was the original frontman, and Phil just the drummer.

submissions
Tito & Tarantula – Strange Face of Love Lyrics 16 years ago
I got first dibs on this gem. I think the theme of the movie "Desperado" with Antonio Banderas (not to be confused with the little known made for TV movie series starring Alex McArthur) is an apt translation. The "strange face of love" is the look of revenge. The look of desperate retribution. Kind of a "I don't give a fuck" devil may care attitude in the search for vengeance against the villains who took the only good thing you had. The eyes of death. "I pity the foo'!"

Neil Diamond – America Lyrics 16 years ago
Anything Diamond touches truly "sparkles", including the vast majority of his wardrobe. Disputedly the best showman in the history of broadcast music. He gives his heart to the audience. America is a sterling example. All hail Neil!

Big Head Todd and the Monsters – Bittersweet Lyrics 16 years ago
Makes me think of all those old country couples in my extended family. The love they share loses its passion, but burns steady through the years. They wouldn't know a life without the other.

Scorpions – Send Me An Angel Lyrics 16 years ago
It is an epic tune that always makes me think of a dark hero rising from the ashes of redemption to find the light before darkest darkness. I first heard it after an old friend left this world. It always makes me cry.

Matchbox Twenty – Long Day Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it is kind of a wry wink and grin. "ain't that right" seems to mean something like the sarcastic "figures" when shit goes just the way you figured it would, though not the way you want it to; and the only way to escape it is to not be "you".

Chris Cornell – Billie Jean (Michael Jackson cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
His voice is so soulful. A sustained mournful wail. Not many can pull it off. Mad props.

submissions
A-Ha – The Living Daylights Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it is about the inevitable "worst case scenario" everyone goes through. The fear being the driving motivation. The proposition that the "last kiss" could very well be the last. Never knowing who to trust, and trusting yourself in an almost godlike fashion. When your back is to the wall, no one really knows what they are capable of.

Men at Work – Overkill Lyrics 17 years ago
Fucking Overkill. What a great name for a song. I think it is about being a little bit crazy, and knowing you are crazy.

submissions
Alice in Chains – I Stay Away Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it has to do with being kind of a ghost, in a social setting. Being there, yet being paid little heed. Not just on the outside looking in, but also above and below. Orbiting, so to speak, about those for whom there is care or respect. I stay away. The video makes me think it is like, "I stay away. See what happens when you bring me in? I am a bastard, but I know to stay away."

submissions
Audioslave – #1 Zero Lyrics 17 years ago
He is saying, "I'll do what you want, even if it sucks. Just give me some fucking credit. I am more perceptive than you think, and if you are not careful, I will be there when you fall. Won't that be a bitch?"

The Rolling Stones – Slipping Away Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it is about getting old, and still being out there rocking.

The Smashing Pumpkins – The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it has to do with seeing all the shit in this world to which people pay little heed, then finding that one crazy person who sees what you see, how you see it. Sitting on the hillside, watching the world tear itself apart as you eat strawberries and drink champagne. It is sad, to have such a dark connection, yet somehow you are still happy. Happy and strange.

submissions
Pearl Jam – Go Lyrics 17 years ago
This tune is all about the last match you have in the house. Your lighter is out of fluid, and you have this one fucking match to spark your J. "Don't go out on me, Don't go on me." "Swear I never took you for granted." The last match in the book. Please, please, please don't go out before I spark. Please.

submissions
Don Henley – New York Minute Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it is about a Wall Street prick realizing, finally, that his trophy wife doesn't care about anything not fiscal. His kids 1. Probably aren't his own. 2. Don't know, or care, about him. and 3. Would be better off without him. He got tired of living off the fat, and he decided to take the leap.

submissions
Manfred Mann – Blinded by the Light Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it may have a thing or two to do with rampant drug use in a culture of free experimentation. "He asked me if I needed a ride."? Whoever he was, his shit was most likely the bomb.

submissions
Foo Fighters – The Pretender Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it is about that moment when you know the serious dirt on someone, (lover or otherwise) and they call you out on something small. It is about saying "No matter how bad you think I am, I can deal with you being as bad as you are, one way or another." And, it sucks when you have to do it to yourself. For good, or ill.

submissions
Billy Idol – Flesh For Fantasy Lyrics 17 years ago
An old friend always told me, "If you see a hot chick, and you know will never see her again, eye-fuck the shit out of her." I think it is about the truly visceral sexual drive people feel, even when it is a different person every second. The fantasy of unsampled flesh. "Doin' the time" is a reference to getting caught eye-fucking. It transcends gay or straight. It is all flesh.

submissions
Ozzy Osbourne – Perry Mason Lyrics 17 years ago
You ever wonder if it might be a tune in tribute to his drug lawyer? A hands on style lawyer, i.e. "how much did you give me, tell me it'll be alright." Just a thought.

submissions
Audioslave – Shadow On The Sun Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about war. The kind of war that is a black mark on a society. The soldiers are never remembered, no matter their worth. Drops of flame become cigarette cherries and muzzle flashes in the darkness. It is a cautionary tale, as I see it. "Do not become the monster I have become, for you know not the monster I am." Kind of a response to "I'll Stand By You" by Pretenders. Just because you see not the shadows does not mean they are not there. Kind of a "trust me, you shouldn't trust me" type situation. May not be the true meaning behind the creation of the song, yet truly profound poetry lends itself to many interpretations. And yes, Morello kicks ass.
