The Moody Blues – Nights In White Satin Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
Band member Justin Hayward wrote the song at age nineteen, and titled the song after a friend gave him a gift of satin bedsheets. The song itself was a tale of a yearning love from afar, which leads many aficionados to term it as a tale of unrequited love endured by Hayward. "Late Lament" was written by drummer Graeme Edge and was read by keyboardist Mike Pinder.<---Wikipedia

This song reminds me of the girl I had an affair with, she was great, but in the end she seemed to be able to grasp something deeper, leaving me in a trance. Great song. Watch out for those Succubus among us... |

Ok, this is the one song I can't really fit in my story for this album, at least it doesn't seem to fit very well.
My view on this is either, the main lover is doomed to not learn anything from the affairs they create and roam the world doing the same actions over and again.
Or...they finally realize what they have done after being destroyed in 'The Funeral Portrait' and they decide to close the book on that part of their life and try and change their ways for the better. |

Ok, this song is a bit confusing in my story line, but I'll try and explain my view.
One of the lovers moves on from the affair that died in 'Dirge For November' and starts a new affair, but while doing so begins to see the similarities from the past.
Or the lover starts a new affair, but meets someone more cynical than they are that is out to hurt them and will destroy them as they did their past lover. |

This one can be viewed in a metaphorical and literal sense to me. After everything has fallen apart in 'The Drapery Falls' the lover who tried to keep the affair/relationship together has reached deep despair. This can be seen as the death of the affair in a metaphorical sense, or the literal death of the lover by suicide due to the agony of not having the other now. |

By now in the story, all is becoming lost. The affair/relationship is dying and it is agonizing the other to see it fall apart. It is slowly bringing the other to what seems to be their end or deep despair. |

At this point in the story that I see.
This song is almost as if one of the lovers is begging the other to stay with them. Plus the fact that they are willing to be the martyr and sacrifice them self to continue this affair. |

Ok, so going along with my affair/relationship view...
I think this is when doubts begin to be shown, on either side. One is trying to maintain the others commitment to the affair and the other is slowly deciding that this is not for them or not right to be doing. Towards the end of the song it almost becomes a job of trying to convince the other that 'This is all you need'. |

I'm gunna go out on a limb for this.
In my personal opinion, I think this is about an affair/relationship that is starting. There are very deep lyrics in regards to sex, plus with some in regards to it being sinful and overpowering. I don't think the words death and murder should be taken literally, I think it's more of a metaphorical mention of parts of them dying/being killed by the other in starting the affair. |
