I think this song is about a guy (although it could easily be from the other perspective) who is trying to cope with his failed relationship. Personally I think he probably did something that caused the split and wonders if "I'm sorry" could make her decide she was wrong to leave him. When he sees her he imagines things in his head whether memories or wants and desires. I think my favorite line is when he says "I swear I saw you opening up again." It's so easy to relate. It's like that moment you think you can be friends with an ex and it's awkward at first and uncomfortable but sometimes something happens that makes it seems like they're letting you back in... and I think he hopes that he's seeing that in the girl. I think the lyrics imply she's moved on though and that he tries to forget about her but all he does is forget why he should move on. It's a very simple song of longing to be rescued from regret and heartache. Very beautiful. |

I've always thought this song was about a failed relationship. The girl in the scenario didn't do anything wrong and the boy feels that she deserves better. Mostly it's about his conflicted feelings toward the girl... he cares about her (and wants to write her name in the sky) but he also would rather not be in a relationship. I always took "free fallin" to either be his view on being free from relationships or that he just gets high to forget about caring. Considering it's Petty I would guess that he gets high to forget about everything and then he's "free" |
