You say you'll provide the birdbath
If I provide the skin
And bathing in the moonlight
I'm to tremble like a kitten
I first thought that this was a description of a man asking the narrator to bathe in front of him so that he can watch and objectify her while she trembles from the cold. I didn't know "birdbath" was slang for washing your genitals (Slynge), so it seems that could be an equally likely explanation. |

I have mixed feelings for this song. I am all for singing the joys of choosing for yourself how you want your body to look & feel, and the music video represents it wonderfully. But the music itself is a real let down. The jumping of the shark, as emueyes would say. |

Fantastic, Nepomuk! The story and the song do have quite a bit of imagery in common. Too much to be a coincidence, maybe?
The lyrics seem to speak of the experience of outgrowing previous boundaries, and the destruction of those boundaries that is necessary. |

Yes, I've always heard "to your next of kin" also. If that is the case, the song must be about death; perhaps the "herring bone" is a crowd of mourners at a funeral dressed in black and white? |

aww Bemis has written much better love songs than this! I'd expect more from the one about his wife... |

This song is about the choices we make- between hopelessness & optimism, and between living with some greater purpose or not. Very personal reflections..
"everything that you do keeps me running back to you"
I wonder who he's speaking to?
"mister crowley" of course, refers to the Ozzy Osbourne song. |

haha, sweater_poorly_knit, yes. and this is an extremely sexy song. I don't think the lyrics are about sex, but they should be. |

I think this song is about a person she met who changed her life- someone who was freed of the burden of material desire (in the wake of your eyes it decays/ you despise any weight / and because you give it up / you are easy to be around) who was unattached to any group or set identity & chose to live very independently (you belong to no one) who never had anything to hide and was very emotionally open (same as what you came with / cuz the door remains the same width) and who she feels very very close to (it's like i'm not even walking beside you / we are rolling along the ground / one shadow made of mercury / we were two till we melted down)
the story about the diamonds in the coal mine demonstrates the freedom from worry that the other person taught her- once attached to the valuable diamonds, she can now laugh when she has to leave them behind. |

I love it!
the second verse is pretty obviously about orgasm.... beyond that, I'm not entirely sure what it's about. |

It's fairly clear that this song has to do with misogyny, and the contradiction that so often the men who hate and disrespect women also desire them sexually. The second to last verse shows this the best: Freud and Rilke are famous for their disdain for women, and Rimbaud is best known as a homosexual. I'm not sure what the significance of Jim Morrison's elevators is, though.
