| Shinedown – Sin With a Grin Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Having been force-fed religion growing up by a hostile church, I can say--read the lyrics again with that in mind. "I never noticed, until I focused On everything you did, you said, You lit the fuse inside my head Thank you for reminding me Of why I'm sick inside Thank you for the venom, did You think it would paralyze? These scars I scratch, I tear Are there under my skin Where you've always been Thank you for reminding me, To sin with a grin" Eventually their psychological tricks and attempts to control no longer work on you, despite the scars they left on your mind. But there's always that lingering ghost. To transgress against their rules deliberately is both a pleasure and a form of therapy. It helps you become an adult instead of a brainwashed child. "Sin with a grin." I'm not against faith or even religion. But I am powerfully against *organized* religion, and indoctrination from birth. It's not wrong to teach a child your beliefs, but it is wrong to make acceptance within the social circle conditional upon accepting those beliefs. Pressuring a child's fragile mind like that is simply wrong. |

| ...or since he says "little girl," and the singer has gone on record as saying he's straight, maybe YOU have major repressed homosexuality issues that you're reading into the song. Ever think of that? | |
| Electric Six – Heavy Woman Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Heh, I thought the same thing about FBM. Well, you could be right that this isn't literal, particularly since it's Dick Valentine. But there is a difference between cute chubbiness, a few extra pounds, still reasonably healthy, not so healthy anymore, really not looking good, verging on morbidly obese, and two seats on the airplane. You know what I'm saying? There's a spectrum. Fat bottom girls may rock Freddie's world, but that doesn't mean he'd be rocking the 400-pounders, you know? There are overweight people who still look pretty good, still walk a good distance most days, have a fair amount of muscle in their limbs; the ones who still are taking care of themselves in terms of hygiene, diet, and exercise despite not being skinny... and then there are the kind with big varicose veins who get winded and wheezy just going shopping at the grocery store. Big difference in my mind. So I imagine this song, if it's being literal, as being about the kind of woman who looks like she could have a heart attack at any moment, not America Ferrera or Christina Hendrickson. | |
| Interpol – Obstacle 1 Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
"Obstacle 1..." I always thought that it was clearly about a woman putting an obstacle in front of herself; namely, her own insecurity. I think it's someone he's known for a long time, who wants a career in a creative field, but is very sensitive. She keeps reading small-time reviews of herself, believing them, and denying every good thing he has to say to her. She always assumes he's saying it to make her feel good, or he hasn't had an education in her field, and she gets defensive about anything that doesn't fit the poor image she has of herself. She "knows" he's "lying" or "wrong"; that he just likes her so his opinion doesn't matter because it must be biased. I think everyone's known someone like that. In the ends, she packs it in, gives up on her music or her art, leaving him feeling heavy-hearted because no matter how much he tried to get her to see how awesome she was, she defeated his every attempt by simply disbelieving whatever didn't confirm her doubt. It was easier not to try, not to risk disappointment. I'm surprised by some of the interpretations on here. Maybe they're right, but I will always see the song this way. I guess the openness of the lyrics is a pleasant thing in any case. |

| AFI – Love Like Winter Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think the song is about falling in love, and the way it's so instinctive... people have a tendency to prey on those who haven't learned better yet; who aren't yet jaded and cruel, but still innocent in their heart. Not yet broken. But it happens almost inevitably--a person who's been hurt so badly will often be drawn to innocence and openness and vulnerability, but realize sooner than the other person that it's not going to work. Then they move on, and the cycle continues. He kept falling for people, both male and female from the sound of it, but it fell apart one way or the other, and eventually his emotional warmth drained away, leaving a cold and jaded feeling behind... eventually, if you're hurt enough, you no longer care so much about breaking others' hearts. You may even feel like you're doing them a favor; getting rid of that naivete which causes so much pain when you invested so much and your reward for it is pain. You can get over that feeling if you meet the right person, but it's so easy to misinterpret your own emotions and the emotions of others. You really have to keep your feet on the ground and not rush it. Otherwise, you fall into the same trap of letting others steal your warmth. The song, in that sense, is like a warning. "Don't fall in love with me; I have nothing left to give you." |

"You don't know that I know you watch me every night..." Sorry, how does she NOT know her FANS are watching her? And which of them are able to follow her around the country watching her EVERY NIGHT? Sure, maybe she says it's about being on stage, but if so it's because that keeps the annoying people from whining about a woman who dares to sing a song like this one. Sorry, but the song is obviously, OBVIOUSLY about voyeurism. "It's all give and take, the kind of love we make..." Dude, making love didn't happen with CROWDS OF PEOPLE last I checked. "When the line is crossed, I get off..." Performing on stage isn't crossing a line. Enjoying a stranger watching you get undressed is. "There's so much left unspoken between the two of us..." Two of us, not a hundred of us. "You could say I'm different, maybe I'm a freak, but I know how to twist you, to bring you to your knees..." There are tons of artists out there. Why would she be a freak for singing on a stage when there are tons of people who dream about that very thing she's doing? Whereas if it's about doing stuff that turns on her voyeur and getting a kick out of it... Anyone who believes this song is really about performing on stage is either utterly naive or just not paying close enough attention. Last I checked, "getting off" was a pretty strictly sexual phrase by nature. |

| Yeah, like others are saying--this song's not about a girl. ;) | |
| Kittie – Charlotte Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The first time I heard this song I knew it was about rape. I've met too many people (male and female) who've been raped to doubt it. | |

| Dude, whatever some religious people have done to mess you up is not the fault of others. There are good and bad religious people just as there are good and bad atheists and agnostics; belief is a personal thing, it doesn't innately make someone a hypocrite or a monster either way. Work out your issues. Going on message boards to swear at people seriously doesn't help fix what was done. You shouldn't take your anger out on bystanders. That would just make the real hypocrites, the real bastards, the real monsters, smirk if they could see it. The best you can do is work on finding a way to move on with your life. | |
