i always thought it was the Special Secret sickness, as in knowing the secret is what makes you ill. i took it to mean his girlfriend, (who is the "the last best thing" hes got going), cant take the pressure of knowing and keeping his 'special secret' anymore, that fact that he is abused by his stepdad, so wants to end things? "let me down gently", he knows she wants out of the relationship and situation |

to me, it is about the end of a relationship speciafically its about someone who isnt fighting to keep the relationship from ending, instead he is sitting around feeling sorry for himself about why it went wrong "He surveys his rental kingdom and he Wonders if he's really lost his one joy" but he never made the effort with her in the first place and never fought to keep her "Another fool would go down to the Only place she ever went to lose herself" he knows where she is, but he isnt going after her maybe it is told from the point of view of another guy who wishes he was with the girl himself but she was with this guy who doesnt apreciate her, and that is why he calls him a fool, because he had everything he wanted, but didnt make an effort to keep it i think this is clear he didnt make an effort with her in the line "Now he looks around his place and anyways There's nowhere she could sit besides the bed" i think the broken car bit is that his car isnt really broken beyond repair, he is just making excuses not to go after her like, another more deserving guy would fix his car, go after her and win her back but he doesnt instead he worries about everyday trivial things "And he wonders if the car will start tomorrow Or he'll have to take the bus instead" (see his car isnt really broken, and there would be other ways to go after her, like the bus) he is letting the relationship end, whereas another fool, but probably more deserving man, would have fought to keep her those are just my thoughts on it, hope that helped :] |

after realising what this song was actually about i suddenly thought about 'Spring Cleaning' and i now think that the pregnaunt Amy in that song is a slightly older version of Amy In The White Coat, and the guy singing Spring Cleaning is the boy who tries to talk to her at the end of this song. iv posted quite a long piece on my thought on the Spring Cleaning page just wondering if anyone else made this connection? |

after reading the lyrics of 'Amy In The White Coat' i had a sudden moment of realisation and what they are actually about suddenly clicked, and i straight away i thought of 'Spring Cleaning' and i agree that it is the same Amy in 'Amy In The White Coat'and it is added to give some hope to the original desperate song. i think this songs takes place some time after White Coat does as the characters seem older, and during that time Amy and the boy who tries to talk to her at the end of White Coat have become friends - he refers to her simply as Amy now, implying they've become friends, instead of 'Amy in the white coat' where he is only vaguely aware of her existance - Spring Cleaning is sung from his point of view. i think she has either confided in him or he has guessed what has been happening with her father. Amy is pregnaunt and it has given her new strength, as although the situation she is in is unimaginally terrible, she loves her baby already i think thats what is meant by the line "she's crying and glowing" meaning there is happiness as well as sadness and Amy wont let her baby be harmed,so she knows she must, and has reason to, change her life for the better. This reminds me of the film Waitress, were the birth of her baby is what makes her realise that nothing else matters and she finally leaves the father. "her man's got an angry mouth He once told me to rot in hell He's poisonous, reasonless Demons and Jesus If he died it'd be just as well" if it is about 'Amy In The White Coat' it makes sense of why the guy singing resents the babies father so much, as he knows the hell he has put Amy through "I wish I could just turn and walk away But I can't do it no way" i think that is him saying he wishes he didn't have to think about things this awful and serious, that it was something that he could just walk away from, but he knows he will be there for Amy no matter what well, those are my thoughts on the song, i think it shows a much more hopeful outlook that 'Amy In The White Coat', and i like the idea that she isnt just forgotten about by Conor. are there any other songs which mention an Amy? another thought about this song, the last chord played in the song is the played and repeated at the start of the first song on the album - just a point i find interesting |
