I hear what you're saying slipknot342, but from my experience and observations, that's not how things work out most times. When someone dear to you is caught in a vicious self-destructive cycle, the knife cuts both ways. You want to be close to them in a time of need, but they fear your judgment and lock you out. You try everything: just listening to their grievance and saying nothing, giving subtle and gentle suggestions, moving on to more direct advice, stepping back to exercise patience while trying to lead by example. But nothing works, the more they hurt themselves the more it hurts you, and you have to watch helplessly as someone you care the world about disintegrates before your eyes. It hurts so much, and sometimes the pain, frustration, and despair get the better of you and it comes out in a torrent.
I'm pretty sure that happened pretty often with Layne's bandmates, and AIC is about catharsis if nothing else. It may seem like they're desecrating his memory, but look at the reverence they hold for him at all other times, and I think you'll see that they're reliving their own searing experiences while reaching out to others who have been there themselves. |

| Hurt – Alone With The Sea (Volume 2 Version) Lyrics

Man, all these interpretations are compelling. I won't say this one is right, but could it be a literal story, in the vein that "Paint It Black" was about a fictional character who lost his love?
Go back a century or so, could have been one of those lost souls mourning a deceased loved one, conscripts himself to one ship or another to drown his sorrows in booze, prostitutes, and the sea itself. Dejected men have done this from the time humans first set sail to open waters, and it resembles many a generic literary character. |

| Jerry Cantrell – Pig Charmer Lyrics

I always assumed this song was about his visits with Layne Staley in his darkest days. But apparently Jerry has claimed that this song is about himself, in that he shut himself off from the world while writing this album, living in the way described above, in all its intensity.
That could very well be the case, but so many artists say misleading things about the songs they write, maybe some things are too personal in some cases. It's apparent that Layne was overwhelmingly on his mind as he wrote Degradation Trip, so I wouldn't be surprised if he started living like him in the depths of the writing process. In which case, the song is about them both, in a way. |

Jerry's openly admitted that his father came back a different person from Vietnam and unleashed his demons on the family. But through his music he seems to have forgiven the old man, and they live together on a ranch in Oklahoma I believe. |

Anyone have any idea what he means by "sympathetic years"? I would initially say he's simply saying to remember the meaningful relationships from one's past, but it seems deeper than that. |

Definitely about a love that passed away, but when I hear the lyrics, it sounds like he's actually describing the funeral service. Carried her to a church, pastor touches gently touches her head, melancholy church music following. Could be a metaphor, but in other songs he always seems to be direct yet still poetic. |
