| First off, great song and a guitar riff that stays with you, very recognizable, even after not hearing it for years. Second, this is about the British, not the Vikings, the British were the ones with a Feudal system in Ireland, an Overlord was the Chief of all of the Lords in the area and reported back to the Crown. Even though the Vikings had somewhat of a Feudal system set up in parts of the world, Ireland was more of a hit and run place for them, not a place to set up for the long haul like the bloody Brit's did. | |

| ShakerMaker....you are correct, he does say Cruzan and Diet but only in the Ocean version of the song. Great song any way you look at it, I prefer the Ocean version, as close as a fan can get to the way he originally came up with the song. I can vision him sitting in the chair and after tinkering with a few versions, says "yo check this out." ...now get us a couple of beers. | |

01-29-2009 Rated +1 First off let me preface this by saying I'm American and at one time I lived overseas in the UK for about 3 years. The lyric "it's a God awful small affair" has nothing to do with what Americans view as "an affair," An affair is an occasion or an event, especially when it's being written by a British person in the early 1970's. When commenting on lyrics you have to put yourself in the time that it was written as well as the place. Words have different meanings from generation to generation as well as when we're talking about countries and trust me, the USA and the UK in 1970 were two totally different places in this world. This song is about escapism plain and simple, she goes to the movies to escape real life and then realizes that even the movies that she sits thru are mindless and uninspiring. The chorus refers to what she's seeing on the screen, stupid movies about sailors and cops. The rest of the lines are somewhat of a subtle rebellion against the system and towards the end he offers a hint of hope for the future. |
