I believe this song can be interpreted in different ways, but my first impression of it goes like this: A guy is in a relationship and it goes great at first --"I say goodbye to what we had"-- but then something changes. This girl apparently has alot of baggage and drinks because of it -maybe-. He watches her dancing knowing somthing has changed, but he doesn't know whether to let go or not- --"gazed upon with dead lover's eyes. She never looked so good, And I never felt so right. I felt so wrong"-- Because he remembers how it used to be between them- --"I just want to forget and let go Of all the joy, of all the pain... I say goodbye to what we had"-- But now she has changed and he doesn't realize it until now because he's been holding on so tightly to her past self-- --"Sometimes when you're holding on, You'll never see the light" I believe the whole song's message is basically that sometimes your holding onto a relationship so tightly, that you don't realize the other person is changing and your growing apart, so it ends up in a downward spiral, but you won't let go of all the happy, past memories. |
