Well I awoke in relief, my sheets and tubes were all tangled Weak from whiskey and pills in a Chicago hospital And my father was there, in a chair by the window Staring so far away I tried talking, just whispered, "So sorry, so selfish" He stopped me and said, "Child, I love you regardless There's nothing you could do that would ever change this I'm not angry, it happens But you just can't do it again" This is by far my favorite verse of this song. I'm don't know if Conor meant it to be interpreted like I do (being as it refers to his attempted suicide and all) but I picture this as a reflection of the nature of God. The father is obviously his father, but the first time I listened to the lyrics I had this total epiphany, like this is what repentance and forgiveness all boil down to. Conor has taken all the religious screaming and preaching and put it simply..."I'm not angry, it happens. You just can't do it again." |
