In the science fiction novella, "Flatland," the inhabitants of a 2-dimmensional world are geometric shapes. It has been popular among mathematicians and scientists since it was written in 1884. In this work men are various kinds of squares, triangles and circles. Circles are an enlightend arstocracy. Women are lines and are dangerous as they can stab men when they walk head-on into them accidentaly or on purpose. |

I love this song but have a different take. I think the protagonist is meant to appear feckless. He is unable to honestly commit "you know that I got married too?" Wow, your wife would be thrilled to know you are calling an old, idealized flame. He knows nothing about the old girlfriend really. It seems to me he is in love with his youth, not any real person. Excellent art almost always enables multiple interpretations. |
