It took me a while to start liking this song out of all her songs from the album She Wolf. After listening to it a couple more times it's coming around. I especially like the "I'm so fresh, I'm so clean..." part. I don't honestly know if this song is based directly to Shakira's own life or written as an interpretation of something. But I could see it somewhat fitting into when she attempted to make it big in the States, and by that, I mean being popular in the mainstream. Imagine being so popular and considered beautiful in Europe and Latin America and coming the the US and people, particularly in this song, the guys not really giving even a second glance at you, because you're not the "typical" beauty. I mean, Shakira is certainly beautiful but she's got the exotic look instead of looking like Cali tan barbie doll. Anyway, this is my initial thought and unedited, at best. I adore Shakira for still being a little "off" and different from what the mainstream is. |

Okay...who needs to chill out? Hmm... Anyway, to each their own regarding interpretations. The nice thing about music is that it can be viewed and invoke different images for different people, whether or not it may be exactly what the artist interpreted. BTW, the thing I like about SongMeanings.net is that I can come here and read how others have interpreted the song. And I can list more idiotic people than said atheists. Talk about a low blow. Lame and immature. |

Although I don't even know what Gears of War is, I think it's ignorance on yourself to say that someone shouldn't comment just because they were introduced to the song through a different source. I actually thank those that posted their interpretations about going to battle because that widens my views on what the song can mean. I certainly don't think there is one set of interpretation for this song. And I don't think DeVotchKa would have given permission for their work to be used if they did not feel it could be related to that movie/game/whatever. |

| To each his own. I think what's best about this song is that it can mean something totally different for each person. And the imagery evoked from the song is...I hope...will not be the same for everyone. | |

| yet another good interpretation mightymatt about the last verse. however, i am going to have to agree with the majority in that the carpet burns are on HER not him based on the video. although i don't think the video captures the lyrics exactly, my interpretation about the song is...in the end when he notices the carpet burns and doesn't make a big deal about it (i.e. he ain't surprised, doesn't care) that hurts her even more than the boyfriend becoming furious and getting into the usual fight because her character seems to crave the attention, drama, and excitement of cheating. | |
