| I'm with you on that - the reviews I've read have been lukewarm to bad. It's understandable, I wasn't sure if I liked it on the first few passes. But it's a grower, the more I listen to it the more I can't stop listening to it. Also, I know it's really overstated that they're purposely going in a new direction, but I think it's pretty respectable to shy away from singles (completely, which is almost unheard of) after being rocketed to international fame on three of them. I really like this one a lot too, I can't figure out the general reaction to it, either. | |

i've been thinking about the first set of lines, and have a few more thoughts: "Dead in the water It's not a paid vacation The sons and daughters of city officials Attend demonstrations It's hardly a sink or swim When all is well if the ticket sells" i've been trying to think of this set of lines as one continous idea, and what it could mean. i'm still having trouble deciding if it is defending those who are famous or rich (and then going on to decry them) or simply saying they don't have it all that bad from the beginning. it could be that the first two lines are stating that even if someone is famous or well off, they still have difficulties and struggles of their own. the next two lines could mean that even those who are well off (sons & daughters of city officials) still have to make their own way (attend demonstrations - which are generally against a city or government) or it could be that the first two lines are referring to most people having to struggle to make it. and the next four lines then start to refer in those who are well off. they have easier lives because their parents hold prominent positions (city officials) and even if they try to rebel against their status (attend demonstrations) they still have inevitably have easier lives because of that status. when he comments that all is well if the ticket sells, i first took this to be a commentary on themselves, that they have money coming in relatively easily if the tickets to their shows sell. but it also occured to me that this could be a play on words and that the ticket could be a political ticket, that all is well for the sons of daughters of city officials if their ticket is "sold" to the public and they make it into office. im sure some listeners got that right off the bat, but im curious to hear what other people think about these first few lines. very ambiguous and intriguing. im leaning towards this interpretation since it is more consistent with the overall theme that the rich and famous don't have it all that bad. |

| i actually like this song a lot. i feel like the weakest song on the album is brian eno (what's the name of the song again? like how many fucking times do they drop his name in that song?) but it still has its merits. | |

can't stop listening to this song its great! i agree with a lot of the comments, they are mocking their own fame and its downsides. mem479 - i take the lines about congratulations to be about artists egos and that they enjoy having their egos stroked. this album, as a lot of people have pointed out, is mgmts attempt to back away from the all the fame they found with kids and their other singles. but there are a lot of lines in this song that i don't understand and don't seem to relate to the idea of mocking fame. "Dead in the water It's not a paid vacation The sons and daughters of city officials Attend demonstrations" im not sure what these lines mean - at first i took the first two lines to mean that their fame is not all fun, but the more i listen i'm not sure that's what they're getting at. also, the next two lines are equally hard to get any meaning out of. any ideas? "Out with a wimper It's not a blaze of glory You look down from your temple As people endeavor to make it a story And chisel a marble word But all is lost if it's never heard" these lines are also confusing, but i think what they're getting at is that the majority of people feel that their lives are small and not story-worthy, but people have a tendency and a desire to make their own lives or others lives "larger than life." i can't tell if the last line is sarcastic. if it is, i take it to mean that even if life seems small and unimportant, that doesn't make it not worth living despite peoples natural inclinations to feel that way. lot of confusing words, but i like having something to think about on repeated listen. love the piano work on this song too. overall a great jam. |

Yes, Animal Collective used to do drugs, but don't think that just because they incorporate a lot of psychedelia into their music doesnt mean that two go hand in hand. Direct quote from Geologist earlier this year: "We do significantly less drugs, we live different lifestyles, and I don't feel any urge to return to that lifestyle." http://pitchfork.com/features/interviews/7585-animal-collective/ Don't oversimplify their lyrics to just be "drug references" and nothing else - you're selling your own interpretation short. |

interesting. i had been thinking the first line ended: "all this movement has just proved your kisses hard to find" which makes sense. the actual lyrics have a different feel them, i like it. |

This song took a bit for me to understand, but it's definitely one of my favorite of the new album. I've been thinking about the beating it theory, and it's really funny. But I think the other guys are right... taking your hand and doing what you what could mean using your life to do what you want to do deep down. Although the masturbation could go along with the sexualism of the line "i really want to show my girl that i want her/need her" Also, the craziness of panda bears 'sliding' vocals around 3:20 really blow me away...his voice control is amazing. I think I have a man crash. Anyone else? Anyone? Uh... This is awkward. |
