Perhaps the name "Lucifer" came into use in the late medieval period, but the story of war in Heaven and the Devil being cast out is from Revelation 12: 7 - 10. The book of Revelation was written in the first century after Christ. |

Clearly, this song is about Satan. For those of you who have seen pro-Christian themes in the lyrics, as a Christian I sympathize with you, and wish it were so. Some of your arguments are strong, but after seeing the video, the fallen angel imagery is obvious. Perhaps Mr. Holopainen is inverting the biblical concepts of God and Satan to encourage his audience to 'think about things before blindly accepting them.' However, he seems to me to be a pretty sophisticated, intelligent and creative chap, and would be going for something a little more progressive than that age-old, boring intellectual cliche. I would put it that he really does believe that Satan is worthy of our worship and all the "Prince of Darkness" and "Father of Lies" hogwash that us fearful, ignorant Christians have built up over the centuries is really just hiding the fact that the poor old fellow just wants to be caressed. Monsieur Holopainen seems like my kind of guy, at opposing ends of the God/Satan stick of course, and I'd jump at the chance to discuss his beliefs with him over a pack of smokes and a 6-pack of beer.
