I take this to be about trying to live a better life but finding destructive habits impossible to let go of. I think the 'glorious sound of the one way street' is a reference to how easy it is to give in to temptation but how that route leads only to downfall. This line confuses me though: "Can't get it down without crying" but I kind of like lines like that, which don't bother to explain too much. |

I always assumed this song was about heroin, but perhaps just because that's what I can relate to, and I think we often tend to read meanings into songs that work for us personally. Never thought I'd have to retire Never thought I'd have to abstain Never thought all this could back fire Close up the hole in my vein These lines in particular seem to describe so well the path of heroin addiction - at the beginning you convince yourself you can cope, and you ignore the fact that somewhere down the line you're going to either have to quit or die. You let yourself pretend the good times can go on forever without consequences. But it don't work like that :( |
