The Smiths – How Soon Is Now? Lyrics 17 years ago
I think Morrissey is the bloody master of articulating the feeling of being an outsider. Someone who has issues being involved in society and being "normal", and finding fulfilling relationships especially. And this song is a prime example of that.

I've never heard any covers, and I'm glad. I don't think I would approve. :\

Laura Marling – Ghosts Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about past relationships, that might have ended poorly or not in your favor atleast, that haunt you ("ghosts" afterall) and taint your new relationships. I think they're both experiencing similar problems and they both wanted things to work between them. But it's not and because they can relate to eachother's problems, she's telling him, "Lover please do not fall to your knees, it's not like I believe in everlasting love" because they both understand that their relationship won't last.
That's just the scenario that pops into my head when I hear the song, anyway. I also think that song-writing is an art, and therefore is supposed to be open to interpretation. ;)
