After reading/watching/listening to everything I can get my hands on about Jeff Buckley for the last 11 years and reading some of the responses here, I'm starting to get a bit frustrated.
Read an interview.
The song is about smoking. Period. |

First of all, the song is sort of like John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery," in the sense that it's written (and traditionally performed by) men, but from the perspective of a woman.
I always thought this song was about a pregnant woman whose lover/husband/whatever ran out. When she wore her apron low (before she was pregnant or before she started showing,) she couldn't keep the man from her door. Once she started moving her apron higher in order to accomodate her swelling belly and the pregnancy was apparent, the guy took off. |

I agree with everyone who says that this song is about being young and prematurely disillusioned with the world, experimenting with drugs and learning about sex. But I always took the line "Sally's in the stirrups, claiming her own destiny," to be about a young girl having a secret abortion, thereby claiming her own identity and making her own decisions. But I have a tendency to be pretty literal. |

Just my opinion, and maybe it's lame...
but I think it's just about loving someone desperately, and knowing that they're wrong for you. They keep trying to make it work, and it always ends badly; they just don't know how to let go, but they don't know how to be good to one another.
