the words "its called the life effect" frighten me. i find it hard to trust people and im disheartened when i hear this song because its as much about the fear of what the silences between words in conversations mean. you know- if you have a bad time with the person you lvoe there's a fear that maybe it wont go back to normal this time... |

john is quite renowned for getting caught up in a thought and taking it to the most extreme outcome that would eventuate from choosing to act on it. this of course is only my thoughts, but when i hear it, the two things i feel are really completely real are the fear of his stepfather, the lion, and the depth of his anger and need for revenge. i think maybe all the other imagery is him creating emotional plunges rather that recounting what happened. can you really imagine john threatening to shoot anyone? can you really imagine him strangling someone? i don't think i can., |

this song is a narrative on the slasher film halloween, i believe. the main psycho guy is called michael myers, has very stylized movie-disfigurement and ends up getting burned in a housefire. he kills teenagers, which deals with the "prom queen, caught in the high beams" line. the interesting angle is that darnielle deals with the song not through the character michael's perspective but the actor who plays him. he talks about the horror in the film with a kind of impartial, buisinesslike air, and the self respect line i think is about having to dress up in the crazy outfit, as is the line about the make up chair, chest, hair bit.
the thing i am not sure on is the "everybody loves a winner" line. i don't know who the winner is referring to: the people, rid of the threat, michael, in satire, because he didnt win at all, or the actor himself's triumphant performance. any one got any thoughts? |

you should hear this song done by john darnielle from the mountain goats. he puts so much passion in it it get a whoel new intensity. he almost screams the final chorus. hope that doesn't turn anyone off it, its actually wonderful |
