Green Day – 21 Guns Lyrics 15 years ago
21 Guns sounds like a Beatles song. I seriously hear some Lennon in there, but I can't figure out what song it sounds like. Has anyone else noticed this?

Franz Ferdinand – Michael Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow, could there be any more guys bashing this song because they're insecure with their masculinity? Seriously, going so far as to rip the whole album but delete this song? It's fun. It's catchy. By being homophobic of the song you're just going to make people think you're in the closet. Like rosaliedawn said, you could take Do You Want To in the same sense, or even Ulysses. It's not wrong, nor is it twisted or disgusting.

And why do people always assume the speaker in the song is also the singer himself? This is about two friends of the band, not the band members.

Franz Ferdinand – Bite Hard Lyrics 15 years ago
I love that "You don't know the pseudonyms I assume" has a double meaning, like she doesn't know he uses a pseudonym (lives a double life perhaps?), or that he just assumes she doesn't know of a certain pseudonym.

It's "Heston with omniscient beard", not "Heston with omniscient fear". I think this is a reference to Charlton Heston's portrayal of Moses in the film The Ten Commandments where he sports that awesome beard. This also makes sense with the previous and following lines: "Are you happy now that the gods are dying" and "You should be happier now with no one to pray to", going by that in that movie the Egyptians begin to doubt the existence of their gods.

Other than that, I think it's basically about a couple who are apart, but they're going to grin and bear it to get through it. The part where it says: "I'd never resort to kissing your photo, honest. I just had to see,How the chemicals taste their honey" shows his despiration. "Your engine's alive, we ride together", well, I don't think that reference really needs to be explained...

Franz Ferdinand – Can't Stop Feeling Lyrics 15 years ago
The new version on Tonight changes "My soul starts spinning again" to "The salt starts stinging again". I'm not sure which one I like better. I'm guessing the new version's is an allusion to rubbing salt in a wound.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 15 years ago
For me this song has always seemed to be talking about Louis XVI's fall from power and the fleetingness of that power. He used to rule the world, but now he sweeps the streets he used to own. Now obviously he's not literally sweeping the streets, but sitting in a prison cell. His castles stand upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand because his life was ripped apart so easily by the people. It talks about how he was taken away from the comfort of his life "It was a wicked and wild wind...". I think the main giveaway that it is talking about Louis XVI is the part "Revolutionaries wait for my head on a silver plate" because he was beheaded. "The sound of drums" refers to the fact that drums were played before his beheading to drown out the sound of any supporters of the king. I don't think "I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing" is supposed to be taken completely literally. It makes me think of the traditional symbol of a bell tolling at the end of a person's life. After he was executed, the citizens attending the beheading began chanting "Vive la Republique!". The fact that the song's title is "Viva la Vida" is no coincidence. The citizens may have been chanting "Viva la Republique", but this song is from the point of view of Louis XVI, and although "vida" is Spanish and not French, as king, he's reminiscing on his life, not the new republic.

Franz Ferdinand – Send Him Away Lyrics 15 years ago
It sounds like this whole song is about rebound sex and the guy speaking is jealous of the other guy the girl he's slept with is trying to get over.

Franz Ferdinand – Twilight Omens Lyrics 15 years ago
It sounds like he's waking up in the early morning (twilight) and remembers he got a girl's number the night before, but keeps seeing signs as to why he should or shouldn't give her a call. The number rubbing off on his face and being backward but looking normal through a mirror could mean that's she's deceptive. But then he hears her name on the radio (what he sees as a good omen) and contemplates giving her a call. Later with her number on a calculator (58008 is the only thing I can think of that would make sense when flipped upside down on a calculator), which I'm guessing he also sees as a good omen.

Franz Ferdinand – Lucid Dreams (Album version) Lyrics 15 years ago
These are the lyrics from the book inside the CD case:

It's "Beat came from Addis Abylon", not "Became from that of Savalan", and "Another Narnia where we can live it", not "Another area we can live in".

A lucid dream is when you realize you're dreaming and you control what happens in it. The speaker is basically fed up with his seemingly meaningless life, "aimless love", and "angry heart", and therefore would rather live in a world where he can live out his dreams, because through them he can create any world he wants, be it the Eastern charm of Istanbul or the magic of Narnia.

Franz Ferdinand – Katherine Kiss Me Lyrics 15 years ago
While I do agree that it's a parallel to "No You Girls", it seems to be from another point of view. The earlier song seems to be from the perspective of a guy on the prowl just looking to get some. In "Katherine Kiss Me", it's from the from the point of view of a nice guy who's shy and is making himself out to be a bumbling idiot in an endearing kind of way. He's nervous and can't say the words he's trying to convey. The second guy actually sees the girl, whereas the first has a more condescending view.
