The Sugarcubes – Birthday Lyrics 14 years ago
Furthermore, if this song really does consist of sexual metaphors, he could very well be smoking a cigar, and the cigar SHE is smoking is something different entirely.

That fact that ravens are black and cigars are typically a dark brown, I'm wondering if the man in the song is black/non-white. Not saying I know this to be true, or that it's even relevant, just that the innuendos seem to suggest the man is not white.

Forgive me if this is totally ridiculous, but is the raven coming from the sky (from a little girl's perspective) his penis?

It would certainly explain sewing it in her knickers a little better...

I should add that I wasn't "suggesting anything" by my use of the word "attraction", in case any of you people squeamish about butt sex get your feathers ruffled.

He had/has, especially at this time, a pretty obvious pre-occupation with the "tough guy" persona for years.

Morrissey – I Am Hated For Loving Lyrics 14 years ago
Not sure why you're complaining... I think just about anyone can in some way can relate to his writing, but you can't act like it isn't incredibly easy for most queers in particular to identify with it better than most hetero-normative people... Why do you think so many gay guys like Morrissey in the fist place? It isn't for his looks! Not these days...

You seem a bit too concerned that a bunch of depressed fags happen to find parallels to their personal lives in a bunch of songs you happen to like yourself, which seems borderline homophobic, frankly... He didn't write this song for you any more than he did Joe Cocksucker down the road, so why are you acting like they took something from you?

Who cares?

I get the feeling this is a song Morrissey wrote about himself regarding his attraction to "tough guys" who he didn't really know or actually associate with (certainly not an a frequent basis anyway).

The Smiths – The Headmaster Ritual Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't see that.

One thing I have considered (concerning the last verse) is that it might be discussing sexual abuse by teachers alongside physical abuse.

I'm not convinced that was the intention, only that I have considered the possibility... but that there is no intention of being overtly "sexual" as much as disturbing and perverse... because, even if you can easily make sexual associations with "He does the military two step down the nape of my neck", it's literally talking about forced sex/sexuality (in other words, rape and punishment/derision to keep a child silent about it).

The part about them being "spineless bastards", to me, lends creedance to the theory as it's a pretty good way to describe most abusers of children who attempt to hide it by threatening their victims... Still, I am not confident enough in that theory to say I think it's totally accurate.

...........and I'm pretty sure Moz isn't that into BDSM and talking about his sexual escapades, or at least not discussing them in his writing... (responding to genxdude91's ridonkulous suggestion).

Morrissey – King Leer Lyrics 15 years ago
I totally disagree with what some folks think this song's about a nice guy trying to win over some bitchy ice queen who chooses to ignore his gestures. At least that's how their posts make it seem)!

"King Leer" is the narrator himself. The song's all about how much of a jerk he is, and how completely clueless he is to the fact.

If you read the lyrics, everything he says and does is self-serving critical of everyone but himself. He's a delusional egomaniac.

First, he tries to buy her with cheap liquor (or Tizer. He didn't even put enough thought into the gesture to remember, but still expects a "Thank you").

He insults her boyfriend (whom she's already in a relationship with, obviously), essentially calling him a pervert ("or could it be the gift of the grab?"), then he himself tries to get frisky with her and she ignores his advances and does not call (why would she, after all?). He takes this personally.

Finally, he tries to get her attention with a scruffy chihuahua. She thinks it's cute, but she's figured out Leer's game, and she understands every halfhearted gesture comes with ulterior motives, so she tries to seem uninterested to get rid of him, leaving him stuck holding the dog.

And he still thinks he's being treated unfairly, of course!

Tod Hackett, the protagonist from Nathanael West's "The Day of the Locust", comes to mind when hearing this song about a man who's very self-serving, self-aggrandizing, and completely oblivious to the fact.

Great song, too... I know NOTHING about music theory, but I love the piano line. The way it goes from upbeat to almost melancholy. I couldn't explain it in musical terms, though...

Swans – I'll Swallow You Lyrics 17 years ago
The way I interpert the lyrics is this: The first half is the voice of an individual asking god/the church/religion to save his/her soul from damnation by giving themselves to said god/church/religion. They are giving themselves over completely to be saved.

The second half is the voice of god/the church/religion showing it's true nature, eschewing all these egotistical remarks ("I was made for myself"/"If I kissed you, I lied", effectivley saying, "I am the highest power, and you are nothing to me").

And then the lyrics "I'll swallow you", etc. to me signify this divine being saying the original voice is going to waste their existence worshipping them, but with little concern for the fact that they are wasting their life on such an uncaring creator. The voice of this god likely feels being worshipped is deserved--"I was made to be admired".

It's really remarkable... The second half has such a sick, twisted beauty about it when you hear it in relation to what's being said. It's actually somewhat disturbing to me, but it's easily one of my favorite moments on this album!

"Can you help *ME* save you soul?" leads me to believe that particular segment may be the interperetation of the Bible by the church/pope/priests,etc. speking to the individual which makes the individual believe they need the church to avoid damnation.
