The Old 97s – Doreen Lyrics 17 years ago
Such a great song! I like the Hitchhike to Rhome version the best. In this song there is a relationship where the singer is obsessed with Doreen. He had a dream that Doreen was cheating on him and he thinks, or fears, that it is true. The thought of his dream and Doreen cheating on him is too much to bear and its all he can think about. "The guy that plays the banjo" is giving him whiskey (Old Crow) to help him forget about it, but the drunker that he gets, the more he thinks about Doreen cheating on him. Eventually he tells the band to pull over at a gas station(Fina) so he can call Doreen and hopefully put an end to this terrible thought. Sadly, Doreen is not there to answer the phone so he thinks that Doreen is out with another man.

This song is about relationships that are ruined by one of the persons being obsessed and reading into hypothetical situations with a bad series of events.
