The Killers – Andy, You're a Star Lyrics 16 years ago
andy was actually flowers' friend in h.s. so i don't think the stalking thing would even be necessary. maybe there was a complicated friendship and the song's about that. friends of the same gender can become really emotionally close or even codependent; doesn't mean they're bi/gay. intense emotional connection w/o the sexual attraction. just a thought.

The Killers – Tidal Wave Lyrics 16 years ago
it's on youtube. google "tidal wave acoustic" - it's the first hit. or "tidal wave acoustic boulder" - that's the first and only time the band has played it acoustic, so far as i know.

The Killers – Change Your Mind Lyrics 16 years ago
the more i listen to this song...i think i hear it a bit differently.

the couple is already together (Out again, a siren screams at half past ten/And you won't let go/While I ignore that we both felt like this before/It starts to show) or "hanging out", and their feelings start to reveal (he thinks) and he tries to ignore it, because he's afraid to ask if she loves him (if the answer is no...) because she might say no. but the relationship stalls because neither of them talk about whether or not it's love (the sun is gone/before it shines). i think the "we're all the same/love is blind" lyric is meant to be ironic. think about it. if we're all the same, but love can't see this, we think the other person is somehow unique when maybe they aren't. i think it makes sense with the killers' sense of wry irony (why else would a songwriter use a cliche?). so i think the song is about the anxious feeling of whether or not to have "the talk" about love or even being a couple.

The Killers – Sweet Talk Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about faith to me - there are just too many Christian overtones. I think this song is about the struggle of trying to be a Christian while being someone people watch/in the public eye. song is a prayer...

Lift me up on my honour
Take me over this spell
Get this weight off my shoulders
I've carried it well
Loose these shackles of pressure
Shake me out of these chains
Lead me not to temptation
(tired of carrying the weight of life's demands/living by principles; asking for help to keep it together)

Hold my hand harder
Ease my mind
Roll down the smoke screen
And open the sky
(help me see what's real/reassure my faith)

Let me fly
Man I need a release from
This troublesome mind
Fix my feet when they’re stumbling
And well you know it hurts sometimes
You know it's gonna bleed sometimes
(it's hard to live faithfully, and his mind gets in the way)

Dig me out from this thorn tree
Help me bury my shame
Keep my eyes from the fire
They can’t handle the flame
Grace cut out from my brothers
When most of them fell
I carry it well
(all common themes in famous Christian prayers/also, ppl aren't very forgiving when public Christian make mistakes/watching other ppl fall in their faith and just wanting to live faithfully even though it's difficult)

Now hold on
I’m not looking for sweet talk
I’m looking for time
Time for tower and sleep walk...
(don't want someone to say "it'll get better", just needs time to ride out the hard times)

You know its gonna hurt sometimes
When you call me
(probably the most obvious clue this song is about how hard it is to be a public Christian - it sometimes hurts to be "called" for that kind of life)

I’m gonna climb that symphony home and make it mine
Let his resonance light my way
See, all these pessimistic sufferers tend to drag me down
So I could use it to shelter what good I’ve found
(going to stay faithful and just ride it out/doesn't want pessimism or sweet talk/that "symphony" (faith) will shelter what good there is in life)

song sounds like any number of Psalms from the Bible. song is so powerful, i can't understand why it isn't more popular?! killers are versatile - can sing about a guy killing a girl or about something this deep.

The Killers – All the Pretty Faces Lyrics 17 years ago
Wow. This is one of the most tormented songs I've heard from the Killers. But emotional and pretty solid. I get why ppl say it's about addiction, but I think it's about something he's ashamed of but wants to confess to. It sounds like a guy who's confused about his sexuality. For the past two years, he's been getting increasingly confused about himself and all the ppl he meets (and is attracted to) in different places he travels. People have been skipping over the "trials" part. I think he's saying that either after his two year mission he didn't become more disciplined in his sexuality and is disappointed that he hasn't become "better". Or, it might imply that his spiritual life hasn't prepared him to deal with this crisis of identity.

He doesn't want the person he's confessing to talk about his issues with anyone else. And maybe the woman he's with knows the secret and doesn't want him to go public with it, but he keeps getting really close to confessing through his music, which upsets her. Still, he really does love the woman, is committed to her, but is confused and tired of hiding his secret.

Or, completely unrelated: it could be about depression and the lack of drive he feels and shame, and the woman he's with is trying to convince him to hold on "shake and plead".

The Killers – Bones Lyrics 17 years ago
Seems to me like he's singing about meaningless sex and trying to use all the social cliches to justify a pretty selfish desire. Reference to "bones" and "skin" in contrast to "holliest" "angel" seem to really stand out. He even reduces something as romantic and poetic as the ocean to "water and sand." And "it's only natural" is the character's way of saying, "it's not so bad...its only natural," when he really believes he shouldn't do it (the voice that tells him to "wait" until tomorrow). He doesn't want to hear the same "relayed" message (to wait). I don't think the lead singer really espouses this view, but that he's getting into the head of someone who's trying to justify his actions (like the killer in Jenny was a friend of mine).

More deeper than sex though, I think it's about how seeing the world as "only natural" just "water and sand" really strips it of its beauty and reduces it to brittle bones.

Brilliant song. almost pleading in its tone, yet very polished. I think it's more of the Killers saying what they mean through reverses and paradoxes. smart band.

The Killers – Read My Mind Lyrics 17 years ago
I've always thought this song was about a woman who wants to get out of her small town and has big dreams, and the boyfriend who also wants to get out, but hasn't really tried or is not sure if he can.

on the corner of main street.../can you read my mind?

(she wants to move ahead in life, and isn't sure if he's ambitious enough, but he has the same dream [can you read my mind?] - she's saying what he feels.)

The good old days.../and a big trapeze
and "Never really gave up on..."

(This is a little synopsys of their story together. he's a good, hometown guy, she's got a restless heart and wants the promised land. they get together. but his "broken wrist" (metaphor for whatever is keeping him in the small town) keeps him from his dream of getting out, his "big trapeze") But he knows he needs her to "shine" (two-star town - she and he are the two stars of their small town, they make each other shine)

The teenage queen.../and a trampoline

(This is the woman's story condensed. She's a star of the town, and to get to that "world unseen" she is going to get into the city over the city wall with a trampoline (her dream) The "before you jump" part reinforces this image)

Slipping in my faith....

(Verse possibly about how an "unanswered" prayer let him down, but he's going to try to believe again.

She said...

(She's willing to have a little faith in him, because she would not shine in he big city without him.)

Put your back on me...

(Saying, trust me. We'll do it together.)

anyway, it makes a lot of sense to me, esp. when you remember the lead singer's from a tiny town, has a working-class background and married a pretty normal gal.

The Killers – Why Do I Keep Counting? Lyrics 17 years ago
I do think the song's about Brandon Flower's fear of flying, but I think there's more too. A general anxiety about life and death (which he's admitted to).

"There’s a plane and I am flying. There’s a mountain waiting for me. Oh these years have been so trying, I don’t know if I can use them. Am I strong enough to be the one? Will I live to have some children?"

[the "mountain" waiting for him is the assumed mountain he crashes into in his imagination. He wonders if his life has qualified him to go to heaven "oh these years...to be the one?"

The "help me out" repetitive part is like a frantic prayer to God to survive the flight. He knows he's reacting irrationally ("behavior's so unexplainable") and feels bad for "bothering" God with his fears. He thinks he wouldn't worry about dying if he just knew how long he had to live. Also, he knows that he ought to just live in the moment and not worry about dying, "if all our days../why do i keep counting?).

At the end, he's making promises about changing his life so the imaginary mountain will eventually go away (and his death in a plane crash).

Great song and really raw. You really catch the frenzy and fear building through the song, as well as the lingering guilt about having irrational obsessions/thoughts. Takes a lot of courage to sing about something that vulnerable. Kudos to the Killers.
