"Tool has said their fans should focus less on the lyrics and more on the music"

Oh.
Well they also said that it's because most fans "don't get it". I kinda wish they could be more clear about what they're trying to express, because maybe what they're trying to tell us is...I don't know. Life-changing?

I don't wish for them to spoil all their lyrics and make them direct and idiotic, but still. *sigh*

Wow, it's great hearing of all these diverse inputs, everytime i listen now I try to imagine it from a new point of view. But i don't think I've read one yet that's like the one I have in mind.

Didn't MJK once say that he was disgusted by people's abuse of psychedelics, because they just go "woohoo" and don't even remember what the point of their trip was?

So, what if some guy like that went tripping, but he ended up having a profound mystical experience...but it ends up driving him crazy cus he can't remember why it was profound?
Just by the feel of the entire song...the vocals...I don't know, it just seems to fit in with this story so well.

"The Chosen One to deliver the message" could refer to how the guy realized the whole meaning of the mystical experience, and now has the great urge to share this knowledge with others (if you're familiar with the whole mysticism thing)

Do any of you wonder if the "borderline" in Stinkfist and the line he refers to in Eulogy ("Don't you step out of line!") and Pushit ("bang your head upon the fault line") as well as AEnema's "try and read between the lines" have a sort of connection? I mean, they're all in the same album.

It could be just nothing (since they're widely used in everyday language), but I'm curious if anyone picked up more than what I did.

By the way...this is actually not quite an atheism concept. but FYI, it's known as "mysticism."

Tool – Eulogy Lyrics 17 years ago
Before I begin on the lyrics, I wanna make sure everyone's familiar with the "ego death" concept: literally the death of your ego, or sense of yourself.
The experience is both blissful and horrifying; the ego does not want to die. But those who have done it consider it divine. Many have tried to taste this temporary "enlightenment" and succeeded while tripping.

What happens is, you no longer refer to yourself as "Myself" because you can't remember who you are. Yet you are still able to act and think.
Consider an infant, how it barely has any judgement, personality, or experience...but still thinks.

Since Maynard is one enthusiastic tripper, I suspect that at one point he reached ego death as well.

Now for my input on Eulogy:
Yes it had to do with atheism, no it does not involve Jesus or Hubbard. Though it occured to me..
Could it be that Maynard was referring to himself in this song?
That the "martyrdom" was not LITERALLY a man sacrificing his body for god, but a metaphor for something similar?
After all, a man's sober mind VS his tripping mind are so different, you could think of them as two separate bodies.

So if, by saying "you" in the song, Maynard was referring to his natural/sober mind (ego..whatever), and that the Maynard singing the words was his tripping mind, would that piece these lyric together?

Imagine Maynard is tripping hard and on the brink of ego death. Almost there. And he's saying:

"You told us how you weren't afraid to die"
Translation: "I've always thought I could embrace this moment without a problem."

"Not all martyrs see divinity, but at least you tried"
Translation: "Many people fuck themselves up on drugs, but not all of them experience enlightenment. Yet I'm trying."

"Standing above the crowd, he had a voice that was strong and loud, we'll miss him"
Translation: "Yes, I remember how strong and passionate I was about this, but now that I'm actually doing it...I don't think I'm ready. I want to go back to the way I was before!"

"No way to recall what it was that you had said to me, like I care at all"
Translation: "I can't think about what I said before this moment, what i said is not important anymore...this is too amazing. Makes every word I've said sound pointless."

"I swallowed his facade 'cause I'm so eager to identify with someone above the crowd"
Translation: "I failed to realize i was unprepared for this, I was too eager to reach divinity."

"You've claimed all this time that you would die for me. Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own eulogy?"
Translation: "As I claimed, I am no longer Myself. Now that I've finally reached it, why is it that I feel so naive?"

"Get off your fucking cross. We need the fucking space to nail the next fool martyr"
Translation: "I have to get back to my personal state so I can tell other people about this. Maybe they'll want to do it too. And chances are, they'll become a fool like me."

Finished. If this makes any sense to anyone, please make me feel less crazy :[
