The meaning of the song is that alkaline trio sold out. In an attempt to expand their fan base, they abandoned their intellectual lyrics for some poppy generic sounding "help me help me la la la las". Now they sound just like everyone else and as the fifteen-year-old punks who's "eye shadow is as black as their soul" begin to buy up their cds like girl pants, I will stop. Crimson was bad, but now this?

This song is a tribute to one of matt's friends who killed himself and the fact that he knew he was depressed but didn't take his suicidal thoughts seriously. this is evident by the line "i've been there myself more than a few times" meaning "everyone gets depressed" the fact that he didn't take him seriously is evidenced by the way he jokes about his friends depression "Maybe your a vampire."

Yep, it's about matt visiting a friend and in San Francisco, falling in love with the city, and loathing the thought of returning to Chicago as he travels home. He actually wrote it while waiting in the airport.

This song is about alcoholism and matt realizing that his drinking is out of control. It has nothing to do with a relationshipe He comes to this conclusion because of the girl (mostly likely a friend whom he had no romantic feelings for) who was just "passing through" his life but noticed his problem when "she slipped and slid on my gut spill" which is probably a reference to violent vomiting that's brought about from partying (not to say that she physically slipped in his gut spill but rather a metaphor that for the fact that she could not ignore his alcoholism much like it would be impossible to ignore slipping on someone's guts.) She brought this problem to his attention and he finally accepts it, realizing what his life's become.(Stale as a 3 dale half beer..., I'd do anything to erase the past nine years of my life) Keeping that in mind, the line is "my liver too soon to abort" not "all liberty too soon to abort"

Alkaline Trio – This Is Getting Over You Lyrics

There are two main themes in this song: Alcohol and Denial. Obviously this song is about a break-up. Dan starts by trying to convince himself that he's better of without "you" (today I woke up younger than I've felt in years). But his thoughts quickly shift to the the subject of the break-up he's trying to avoid thinking about as he recalls how he contributed to the demise of his relationship by being too sensitive (controlling with my moodswings, threw a thunderstorm your way) He goes on to say "drowning girls is a game a play" which suggests that this sort of behavior is all too common the Achilles's heal in his relationships. The songs continues into the second verse in which Dan sings "today i woke up, more awake than i have felt in years" in a much higher and louder tone, which suggests that he's desperately trying to convince himself that he's better of without being in that relationship. But, like before his mind shifts back to the relationship, thinking about how she hurt him (you're the queen of pain). In response to these thoughts he begins to drink singing "drowning myself is a game I play" which suggests that drinking is how he handles most of his problems. As he continues to drink he repeats this line until he doesn't care anymore and declares "goodbye" At this point, the song progresses to my favorite part in which: the lines "this is getting over you are sung while matt repeatedly proclaims "I'm not tired of being alone" This repetition is him convincing himself that he'll be okay. The "i'm not tired of being alone" gives this part of the song a sarcastic tone while the repetition contributes to the theme of denial. What an amazingly written song.
