I think this is from the point of view of a guy in a relationship with a woman who is self-destructive. He cares about her enough to be affected by her self-destructive nature, but because of her issues (whatever they are - they don't seem to be mentioned in the song) he's not seeing a lot of emotional investment into the relationship from her side. This song is him saying that he's prepared to give her all the emotional support and patience she needs, but he needs some commitment and emotional investment from her, or he feels the relationship might bring him down with her. He's laying a bit of an ultimatum, in that if she doesn't commit to changing her life and getting more involved with the relationship then he'll leave (even though he feels she "won't make it on her own"). |

What is it with the sexual innuendos? I see Top Yourself as a song about suicide, and the masturbation thing for this song doesn't fly for me either. The gear-shift idea (which kinda makes sense) passed me by, but I thought "five on the five" was a twisted version of "five-by-five" used when talking about radio signals (5x5 means loud and clear). I thought this fit with him looking nothing like the kids in the videos - he's too ugly to go on TV but he's on the radio so that's ok. |
