He sends out free sample CD's...a pretty cool way to get music out. Seems like a great guy with a great philosophy. |

| Rogue Wave – Christians in Black Lyrics

I think this song is about hypocrisy and how fake and mechanical people can be. Shuttled between LA and Oakland, drinking on the bus or plane or whatever mode of transportation it is, people don't even care what they've become. Faked an election...everyday is just like the next. Do we really stop and think to understand who we are anymore, or what kind of life we live? We are Christians in black, living a hypocritical, empty life. |

| The Dodos – God? Lyrics

It's about that timeless struggle to understand God. "Tell me how you wear that crown of right... you lift us up then let us down." It contains those common themes that people often struggle to grasp when they attempt to rationalize God and his actions (or lack thereof). How can God exist if there is so much evil in the world? Why do we hide from God if it is he who gives us love? God gives hope and strife simultaneously which leaves Meric (and the rest of us for that matter) to ask, why?....God? |

| The National – All the Wine Lyrics

If you know the National well enough, you know that they likey the alcohol, particularly Matt Berninger haha. Abel, Green Gloves, Lit Up, all contain allusions to alcohol. This song is no exception. Alcohol makes him feel like he's the man. He's a drunkard and a glutton (possibly alluding to Jesus, but i think it's more about the narrator). He's selfish, "all the wine is all for me" and he thinks he's invincible, "nothing can touch us my love." He's glowing and bright (birthday candle in a circle of black girls) and the finest specimen anyone has ever seen. |

| The National – Cardinal Song Lyrics

I saw the national in Michigan last summer, and someone shouted out a request for this song, upon which Matt Berninger said, nope sorry i don't want to do that one because you'll all go home and want to kill yourselves. It is a thoroughly depressing song, but it still would have been beautiful to hear live.
The way I see it, it's about a guy who's tried to love in the past, but has come to the conclusion that love is essentially dead. "Never tell the one you love that you do." As if to say, what's the use, she won't care. "Don't let her see your cardinal eyes" I think is certainly a reference to red eyes after crying. He may have given his heart up in the past, but it yielded nothing but sorrow. |
