North side of Dublin was well known for its tenement squares. They were built for the poor and the poor stayed poor within them. entire families would live in one room without heat, food or any chance of escape during the early and mid-20th century. this song is played in the special features of The Commitments, a movie about a Soul-cover band that emerges from this block of tenements in Dublin. I highly suggest it. |

hamlet. people discussed this a bit on the slow show page, but it makes even more sense listening to this song. hamlet is 29, he is singing to Ophelia, the swan who dies in the river. and what better word can be used to describe the Hamlet's relationship with Ophelia than disillusionment? and then these lyrics are used for Slow Show on Boxer, which is really an album that hopes to define the feeling of being unsatisfied, disillusioned and inadequate. |

i thought it might be using cigarettes as an excuse to escape monotony. sheltered children(bedroom kids) paralleled by sheltered adults(body guards). "only lasts a season" might reference the constant changing of fads by which we structure our lives. he hopes to "untie Manhattan", or maybe break off from the daily routine of working in the city? he believes he's in control, but he's only grasping at an escape. a cigarette. |

| i thought it might be a reference to the samaritan woman as well. the samaritan woman at the well feels distant from Jesus as she is of a different gender and community (men and women didn't talk and neither did Jews and Samaritans at that time in Judea). so the character in the song feels distant from the religion of the school she attends. like she doesn't belong. | |

i always interpreted the line "we had a fantasy affair, we didn't get wet, we didn't dare" as being very sexual rather than metaphorical for taking a plunge. like having a sexual fantasy but still not daring to actually consummate it cause they're too shy. |

beautiful song. the mummy is awoken by a woman whom he instantly falls in love with. he eventually becomes stronger, learns her language and becomes accustomed to the world around him. As he grows stronger, she becomes weaker and eventually dies. That is the curse. I love the ending. "she asked 'Why pryamids?' He said, 'Think of them as an immense invitation.'" its as though he is spelling out the reason why she found him and why he will eventually take her fame and life. |
