| The Wallflowers – Murder 101 Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I tend to agree with the first comment on this song "I always thought I knew enough/I didn't want to learn this stuff/I didn't ever want to be that tough/But love was just implied/And everything else died" Here the subject is claiming that he thought he knew enough about love, but what he knew was the romantic view of it. He didnt want to learn the bad side of love. This might be a little bit of a blind stab, but to me "Murder 101" is a metaphor for learning of heartache, breakup, and despair when it comes to love. "You can learn it in the first degree/You could even make yourself believe/That you'll never even think of me/When you're packing up your things to leave" Here he seems to be talking about a previous lover who left him, and that this person is learning some of the material for "Murder 101" "Find yourself another heart that needs a rest/Tie a hook onto a single thread/Drop it down beneath the chest/There's the first part of this test" Here the author seems to be explaining to his former lover how to continue to be a better heart breaker and pass "Murder 101." By finding another heart that has been battered, and becoming attached to that new person just as the author was attached to this person. "Drop out before they come/To Murder one by one" All I can figure from this is that he is telling me people to avoid these people while you can. If you do not these heart-breakers will "murder" one's idea of love one-by-one. |

| The Wallflowers – I've Been Delivered Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I firmly believe this song is about a journey through life to attain freedom and peace of mind. "I could break free from the wood of a coffin if I need/But nothin's hard as Gettin' free from places I've already been" "Now turn off your lights 'cause I'm not comin' home/'til I'm delivered for the first time" This speaks of the troubles of beginning his exodus. He knows he can "break free" from the status quo, but knows it will be difficult. Thus he basically says you shouldnt wait up for him because it may take a while for him to be "delivered" from his current state of mind. "I would move swift when the sounds of a trumpet would blow/I've been the puppet/I've been the strings/I know the vacant face it brings" "Now the bells of curfew they may ring before I'm through/But soon I'll be delivered for the first time" Here he states that in the past he would just do what he was told, and knows that it doesnt bring him happiness. Also, even if his former authorities come calling for him, it doesnt matter, because hes on his way towards deliverance from their law. "And I just wave back like a little boy up on a pony in a show/'cause I can't fix something this complex any more than I can build a rose" "So just keep on letting go/'cause I must be close to being delivered for the first time" At this point hes just waving good bye to his old life, and knowing that the damage he has done to it is irreparable. So hes just going to "keep on letting go" of the past because hes so very close to the new state of mind hes striving for. "Now I'd rather bleed out a long stream from being lonely and feel blessed/Well than drown, laying face down in a puddle of respect/I was once lost in the corridors of the arena/in blindfolds I've been the bull/I've been the whip/I just pulled down the matador" "So now, turn on your lights/'cause I'm comin' home I've been delivered for the first time" Here he claims he'd rather be by himself and be at ease than be well liked by others but suffering on the inside. He was once blind to the fact that he was being toyed with (as a bull is toyed with by the matador) in his prior life, but then he took down the people holding him down (the matador). Now that hes victorious you can prepare for his return (light on) because he has in fact reached the peace of mind/freedom he was seeking. Hes been delivered for the first time. |

| The Wallflowers – Too Late To Quit Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I agree that he could potentially be having a conversation with God, either that or close friend or loved one. Suicide is also a possible option as to the topic of the conversation, but I dont think its limited to that. The person being spoken to could simply be depressed, lazy (you've got to do the work, so get your ass up), or be in some sort of rut, and the person talking to him/her is trying to encourage them to get up and get past it. Many lines point to this such as "you've got to keep moving, you've got to keep pushing," "Now's a good time to learn how to pull through," etc. So I agree with your idea, I just dont think its limited to just God and suicide. Oh, and I like this song. Its solid. | |
| The Wallflowers – The Passenger Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This is probably my favorite Wallflowers song, but it's always tough to choose. To me this song speaks of man's general disinterest in the fact that the Earth is "slipping of the radar" and "heading straight into the blackness." The passenger is a metaphor for mankind as we take a ride on Earth through the universe and time. However, the fact that we are "sitting backwards" represents the fact that we have turned a blind eye to exactly where we are headed. We choose not to accept that what we do today could have dire consequences in the future, and instead just go along for the ride heeding not where we are going. Man is just "too far gone" to know where he is, and the "conditions are worse than we planned." I could quote just about every line in this song to back up this arguement, but that would get very redundant, so Ill leave yall to agree or argue. | |
